Im using 850-875 watts with a i7 970 @ 4.3ghz 1.42v, 2 x GTX 460 and a GTX 580. All gpus overclock with 18 fans and water pump. The GTX 580 uses double the amount of power that the 460 uses. With a 1000 watts ps it will be close if you oc your cpu. Thats why I got me a 1200 watt psu.

The CPU is going to stay stock as well as the RAM. Only the cards to going to be overclocked. I might have a few fans but they will be running from a different power source.

Instead of a GPU only folding rig have you considered a CPU/GPU combination?
A GPU only rig with (5) GTX460's will get you about 60K PPD (Average 12K per GPU x 5).
A 2600K, running -bigadv, should get about 45K so add in a couple GTX460's and you are at 69K PPD.
The big advantage is that you don't need a 2000 watt power supply to run it.

my point exactly.

500w in 460s + whatever CPU (athlon X2 doesn't use much power)= much less than 1kw

buying another gtx 460 would be good idea, obviously if a 460 costs same as 560 etc then buy one of those.

edit, you can buy same one as mine, asus gtx 460 cu top for $130 after rebate, overclock the crap out of it, ive had over 900core on it.

If your going with 5+ gpus i would recommend a motherboard with a supplementary power connector like the MSI x58 big bang. It could handle 7 cards and has an extra 6 pin connector to prevent any meltdown. If you are going to stick with the amd option you will want at least a x3 since my x2 250 is almost maxed with 4 overclocked gtx460's.

I haven't though of that. What if i go like this:

i7-950 from MC - $200
MSI Big Bang-XPower -$265 AR
CORSAIR XMS3 6GB - $65
NZXT HALE90-1000-M 1000w - $200
4 x GTX 460 - $644 AR

All this can still stay under my $1500 budget. The MOBO has 6 PCIe slots so it allows me to add more cards later on.

EDIT: how big of an impact will 4 GPU clients have on the bigadv client?

I think you can do bigadv with 7 threads and still fold with your 4 gpus. You should be close to 75-80k PPD.

The more GPU clients you have the more of an impact you will see on the bigadv client. Finding the right combination of GPU's clients and CPU clients is the key.

I can tell you that an i7 920/930 (4 Ghz, -smp 7) with 2 GTX460's gets about 52K ppd. 30K from the i7 and 11K each for the GTX460's.

My suggestion, based on a budget of $1500.00, would be:

The PPD from the i7 970 alone will be 50K plus ~11K each for the 460's for a total of 72K. You can also add more GTX 460's in the future.
