My original plan was to build a system running 5 gtx 460s, but after getting suggestions, I went with an i7-970 with 3 460s for cost/performance. I will add cards later as i get the money to buy them.

just out of curiosity does anybody know if using pcie riser ribbon cable decrease performance?

Hello ali7up,

In theory, a riser card should add latency to the bus. Whether or not that latency causes a problem at stock speeds I have no idea. Manually adjusting down the bus frequency and/or forcing the bus to operate at 4X or 8X (instead of 16X) may solve stability problems (if you even have any). I wouldn't expect this to have much effect on folding performance.

Hello usmcz,

They either give out bonuses or they don't... Can't have it both ways. If they do, then the points given out are not in direct accordance with work done. If they don't, then it's possible that the points can be directly correlated to work done (depends on how they've decided to allocate points).

Update: The parts should be here tomorrow but i saw this deal at MC plus using the coupons and the $50 rebate. I can buy another 460 for $84. With the farm im building i already have 2 evga 460s and 1 galaxy 460 with i7 970 and 1000w psu. Should i buy another galaxy or will it be less effect ppd wise. Thanks

1. Buy another galaxy 460 and SLI or not
2. Sell the galaxy and buy 2 other folding cards
3. Sell the galaxy and buy 2 better 460s.
3. Keep the galaxy and buy another folding card.

What do you guys think is the best option for maximum folding. Thanks
I say go pick up a 2600k and a cheap mobo, OC it to 5Ghz and net yourself 50K ppd.

After reading around the folding forum. It showed the 970 does better at folding even when running at smp 11 over the 2600k. This will be my first folding rig and if it turns out good then next month i plan to build another.

So what do you guys think? I7 970 with 3 460s(2 evga & 1 galaxy) or 4 460s(2 evga & 2 galaxy) for best efficiency/folding? Im tempted to buy those galaxy 460s from mc for $85.

I think with the 970 you can still have 4 cards and not see too big a hit with -smp 11
post #88 of 132
I have a GTX 580 and 2 GTX 460's folding with the 970. -smp 11 works perfect. At 4.2ghz -smp 11 you will get around 44k PPD with the 970. At 4.4ghz is around 50k PPD. The most you will get with a 2600k at 5ghz -smp 12 is around 50-52k PPD. So clock the 970 to 4.4ghz -smp 11 and get the same PPD as a dedicated 5ghz 2600k from smp alone + around 44-50k PPD from 4 GTX 460's. It can be more if running linux.

The 970 will definitely beat the 2600k, but you can buy 2x 2600k cpu's for the price of a single 970. 1155 mobos/ram are also generally cheaper. If money isn't an issue and space is--the 970 would be a better choice. Otherwise, just get some smaller cube-style matx cases and a solid matx p67 board with low power 80+ psu's and you've got rigs that will throw ~40k (low estimate) each ppd on cpu alone. Toss in a GPU (460 or better) and you're looking at ~52k+ ppd each while remaining relatively low power, low cost to implement, and easily expandable.
