Router Signal Help

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Basically, I've been having signal issues since day 1 of wireless internet, I've had multiple routers, and nothing seems to increase the signal to my bedroom.

Currently, I have AOL internet (Yes I know, it sucks), I get between 2-4megabit internet speed. I used the AOL router, which was a D-Link 2640B, could not even reach my bedroom, which is about, 7 meters away? Through 1 Supporting wall and 1 partition wall. The router is located in my living room at the rear end of the house, which is an extension with a flat roof, the rest of the house is a standard bungalow.

Now, for the last 4 years I've been using a Belkin N1 Wireless Router, I get 2 bars of signal in my room, but there are constant IP conflicts, which I've tried to sort out by changing them manually in the Ipv4 settings. That didn't work, still got IP conflict issues.

The Belkin router, just stops working, almost 5 times a day. We have 4 laptops and 1 desktop computer in the house, 1 laptop is used as a bridged connection for the desktop as I don't have enough money right now to invest in a long enough cable, or to get a guy round to move the router into my room. And the other laptops are used infrequently, my brother has a MacBook, and he is in the room next to mine (we live in a converted bungalow, so there are only two rooms upstairs, it's quite a small house), and his connection is intermittent.

I've changed the channel countless times (we don't have anyone with internet who lives near us, as we live sort of in the countryside). We do however, have wireless phones that run 2.4ghz. I've done some research into what routers to get, and basically I ended up ringing belkin's hotline, and I asked this very friendly guy what was the best router for me, he didn't reply with a belkin router, he told me to get a linksys E3000, cause I'm an online gamer etc...

I don't know what the best solution is for me here is a breakdown of possible solutions I've come up with:

- Buy a new router and get a wireless adapter for my Desktop
- Move the router into my brothers room (as it would be impractical to put it in mine due to it's location and the sheer amount of cable)
- Buy a very long ethernet cable and run that through the house to my bedroom.
- Buy a signal booster/repeater and a wireless adapter for my desktop.
- Don't buy anything, and find out what is causing the interruptions with the router.

My router's wireless is constantly flashing amber, which means (according to Belkin) there are signal problems/conflicts/etc...

If anyone can suggest a cost effective solution, without going all out getting a £100 router to increase the signal, I would be much appreciative.

Sorry for the long post, and hope I can help anyone who replies with any of my knowledge, thanks!

From reading your post and the headaches you are having with signal interruption/ loss of signal somewhere within the area or the router it self.
Im not firmilar with that router but if it were me i would ( money permitting ) invest in a new router that can be flashed with 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT or TOMATO. Within the routers settings there is a setting for increasing the signal strength and i would also centralize the router for better line of sight and reception.

I have literally no idea how to do that... or what DD-WRT or tomato stands for, I know essentially what it is, but, yeah...

I cannot centralize the router, it is stuck where it is for now. Otherwise I would. I think I may just go with a new router option, and my friend is giving me a huge ethernet cable. Which will definitely help, I'm fed up of this bridged connection and not being able to use my laptop for a laptop lol!

The better routers that are offered today can be flashed with a much more stable firmware that have much more settings for tweaking and in your case boosting of signal. DD-WRT or TOMATO are 3rd party firmwares that can be flashed to routers taking the place of the original firmware that the router was shipped with.

Some good routers to look for are the asus, netgear, linksys.
