USB devices keep "reloading"

Hi,
I have a very annyoing problem; whenever I have a USB device plugged in, it keeps "reloading", meaning it all of a sudden loses it's connection with my computer, regains it a second later and the box saying that "new hardware has been found (or something like that)" pops up. Then it works fine for awhile but then it loses connection again and so on.
This is particularly annoying when I'm transferring files to a flash memory or external hard drive as the transferring is sometimes interrupted and the whole procedure has to be repeated.
Nothing shows up as strange in my hardware tab and I get no error messages at all, it just loses connection.
I'm running win XP with SP3.
Does anyone know what can be causing this? Any suggestions are welcome.

how many usb devices do you keep plugged in?

could be a power problem
what are the 5v and 5vusb ratings on your power supply?
try a powered usb hub, with external 5v power supply

Could also be that you have too many things set to poll at 1000Hz. Although that would result in another power problem.

So yeah, definitely a power problem or something making bad contact with something else.

Well it could be a power issue of course, but I never keep more than one USB device plugged in at the same time, I don't have a USB keyboard or mouse. My external hard drive has it's own power source and the above-mentioned problem still occur. How can I figure out for sure if it's a power issue?

I'm not sure what this means.
