ULTRA MEGA XTREME KILLER i5 RIG (56k death)

Yeah, I'm just kidding, but I bet that title caught your attention wink.gif

The hardware

Well, let's see what the nice mailman brought me today:

A sexy motherboard:

An MSI P67A-GD55 and it's a B3 stepping! wheee.gif

A nice little CPU:

Some RAM:

Just the usual.

A nice "little" cooler for my nice little CPU:

Smexy.

And last, but not least, 2 giant 140mm fans for the top exhausts:

2x Noiseblocker XK1, 800 RPM and they seem absolutely massive when you're used to 120mm's. They aren't, but they appear to be at first.

I have to say that I quite like the new mailman. Nice presents.

rolleyes.gif

Ok, so after spending half an hour removing all the old HW (or most of it) and getting everything out of the packaging, I got to the fun part:

Putting it together

Ok, I kinda forgot to get a before pic, so I already installed the new fans:

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. The fans looked, smelled, and felt like enthusiast fans, but they weren't threaded from factory. I hate having to ruin screws just to mount fans. Oh and BTW, they look blue on all pictures, but they are in fact dark purple.

The case looks kind of sad when it's empty. So let's fill it!

Me mighty cooler in all it's glory!

Pop the CPU in the motherboard.

Applied some TIM (apologize for the flash, I couldn't get a good shot without it) and prayed that it's enough.

Now it's starting to look like a working PC.

Added RAM and the fan (in that order). It might be a good idea to leave the fan off until the cooler is in the case, but OTOH it was actually quite difficult to make the mounting clips stay on the cooler...

This is an Arctic Cooling F12 PWM fan for the record. I have 2 of 'em. They're quite good and were recently picked as the best budget fans for heatsinks/rads by Martinm210.

My ghetto wire hiding skills pay off. Also, 4-pin daisy chaining FTW!

After an hour off fighting cables and various other hindrances, all the hard work pays off:

The final product

I'm quite pleased with myself, this is IMO a very clean build and I love it. It's the first time I meet her, but I'm sure we're meant for each other. Love on first sight.

Overclocking

I decided to do a review of the MSI board, so OC guide and result can be found here:

Haha, it's an epic title ^^

What were you expecting, a HAF, LED's all over the place, and a stock Intel heatsink?

I paid $710 / £444 for this. That's, of course, excluding graphics card, case, HDD's, and PSU, all of which I had already.

A build like mine would cost about $1200 from scratch here in Denmark.
