my motherboard can do crossfire though the 2nd PCI-E slot can only do 4 lanes instead of x8

stick with 4870. From my own experience, 4870 will perform better then gtx260. A month ago i swapped my old 4870 512mb for gtx275. And from my own observations i can tell you that there is no main difference between those two cards. Somewhere gtx275 performs a bit better than 4870, but somewhere it's even slower. Moreover, gtx275 is also hotter and more power hungry.
I was testing those cards on catalyst 10.10 and nvidia 260 drivers for both cards respectively. So finally i decided that gtx275 is not what i want in my system and i bought gtx460 1gb.
P.S. the only game where i noticed somewhat significant performance increase with 275 was gta 4
