Flight Simulators - Page 2

One thing I find unpleasant about MSFS is I can't seem to find an instrument panel on any of the planes (airspeed, altimiter, compass, engine settings). Best 80's reto flying game was one called "Flight of the Old Dog". You took a heavly moddified B-52 (the 'old dog') on missions into Iraq (and this was a pre 1991 game). There is a book of the same title.Another great book and I also think game is Flight of the Intruder,Thud Ridge is just a book but a great story about F-105 missions over Viet Nam.

I can't seem to get the carrier takeoffs (much less the landings) going in MSFS (the plane just sits there).Best flying is those carrier landing simulations.

FSX is where I would start. Xplane while more realistic in flight physics lacks the looks and the community that FSX has. The combat simulators can be overwhelming if you don't have any prior sim experience so I would stay away from those at the moment.

Moving on to what hardware you want: It all depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. If you want to just fly commercial I recommend a yoke. All other airframes I would invest in an entry level HOTAS system (buy adult used). I personally own the Saitek X52. While it is perfect for Helicopters, I do feel it is a bit "sloppy" for jets.

Sound good? Is that joystick good?
I have a X52 and love it. I stongly suggest FSX if your PC will handle it. Tons of free planes and mods to use both freeware and payware. FSX now has some great weapons mods.If you need any kind of help with FSX check out the link below.Great people.

While that did happen, Microsoft has got a new team working on Microsoft Flight. It aims to allow newbies to have a fun flying experince, while Experienced pilots or enthusiasts can play realistically.

People in the community are very skeptical of it. I personally will steer clear. Any simulator that has a "difficulty setting" or is "newbie friendly" is a simulator that isn't going to be very real.

They will dumb it down in the attempts to reach a broader audience. Most will stick to FSX or navigate to xplane.
