Fraps vs. ?

Thread Starter
I own the registered version of Fraps and I'm wondering if it is still the best for screen-capture?

Are there any other comparable programs out there worth it for me to purchase since I already own Fraps?

Camstudio is free and pretty decent.

Fraps has better quality than Cam Studio and is easier to use.

I registered Fraps. I have never found anything better for what it does.

I use playclaw as well, I find it to be much better than Fraps since I don't lag very much in game when I'm recording (I can record BC2 maxed out with about 5-10 FPS hit). You can download a free version with no recording limits on it, the only thing that's different about the free version is that there is a watermark like the free version of Fraps.

afterburner its free and does not take a lot of overhead at least for me.
no audio yet will be added in 2.2.0

That's one thing I've always despised about Fraps. But is the quality as good as Fraps?
The quality is very good, the only downside is the gigantic file sizes for the videos. For example I have a 12 minute video that's 24GB large, I find that for every minute I record it adds 2GB of file size. I have a dedicated Hard drive for this kind of stuff so it's not an issue, however if you don't have any extra space then you may want to avoid playclaw. I compress the videos afterwards with VirtualDub and I've gotten video's from 14GB down to 450MB without noticeable loss in visual quality.

The thing that's key about getting Playclaw to run well is a mixture of compression settings in playclaw (it has awful built in compression) and core settings, Playclaw takes advantage of multi core processors and you can assign how many cores you want Playclaw to use for recording. I'm still actually messing around with different core settings for different games because some games don't record as well as others.

Sorry for the wall of text.

Playclaw is now what I use. And it has easily beaten FRAPS.
