Or what if the Earth is still spinning at the same speed, but the earthquake increased the Earth's circumference by a small amount - Gowing Earth Theory is starting to make even more sense

Well, I guess the Japan quake was a real wake up call then
post #33 of 66
You know what this means right? Someone in Japan has figured out how to divide by 0.

I know I'm ignoring a couple major things here, but it's fun to think about.

Except for the day to get shorter, wouldn't the earth's radius (and therefore circumference) have to get smaller? And in effect, if it gets smaller the force of gravity does change according to Newton's law of universal gravitation.

If I live to 85, my life will be almost an hour shorter.

Scientists could easily detect any significant change in the overall circumference I would imagine. The surface is always changing, but not significant enough that the Earth could get larger. Just my opinion though, I'm not an expert on this stuff or anything.

No matter what circumference the Earth was, the day length would be the same, assuming the Earth continued to rotate at it's current rate.

For those wondering why:

Spin around in your office chair with your arms spread straight out. Get going real fast, then pull your arms in. You spin faster.

The same principle applies here, except that instead of a person pulling their arms in, it's a massive tectonic plate settling several meters toward the earth's center. So the earth spins faster, so the day is shorter.

You'll see quite a few roads ripping in that way. I'd assume it has to do with the methods of laying the lifts of the asphalt. Still pretty surreal to see a road like that, almost looks meant to be that way.

Also, take it from a geologist: growing earth theory is bunk since it can't explain subduction. Tectonic plate theory matches all known data sets and is thus almost considered 100% factual, like gravity or evolution.
