[Question] AM3 compatibility with an AM2 Motherboard

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm new here and I want to do an upgrade to my system without having to upgrade the motherboard, cpu, and ram. I have this motherboard: ASUS M2N VM DVI. It supports AM2 and AM2+ processors, however there is no BIOS update for AM3. Now I understand that AM3 Processors will work on AM2 motherboards.

I would like to know if I can buy an AM3 processor and place it on my AM2 motherboard. I also have a second question. If this cannot be done, I would like to know would it be a good idea to overclock my processor. The processor I have is the AMD BE 2350 Brisbane.

Thanks,
Ryan

first, go to your profile and update your signature to show your components so we know what parts you have so we can help you better

second, am2+ boards will fit am3 cpu's

third, what board do you have. if you don't have a board that can support overclocking then it's not advised

the 6150 chipset can support a Phenom II.....

but probably only 95w maxx

the key here is finding out if the socket is am2 or am2+

use a program called CPUZ to find out

I wouldn't overclock on that board... It's power circuitry is super bad and very cheap, and it only supports 65W TDP or lower processors. If you start increasing voltage and frequencies, you could end up frying the board very easily.

Secondly, if the CPU or CPU family is not on the motherboard support list, then there is no way you can get it to work. I'm looking at the Asus website for your board, and it supports nothing past the first generation of Phenom. This means it's impossible to make any AM3 CPU work, like Phenom II, Athlon II, etc... You could try contacting Asus and asking if it supports the Athlon II (since some CPUs are 65W or less), but I'm pretty sure the answer will be no, and they will never offer bios support for anything more than they currently have.

It can support it assuming there is bios support, which there is not. Also the board only supports 65W max, look how cheap the power circuitry is. I wouldn't trust that board for my grandma's PC. It only supports up to the Phenom X4 9350. So you can tell it supports the Phenom X4 series processors, but not any higher TDP models like the 9750, 9850, 9950 or what have you.

A link to the board is here if anyone wants to take a look: http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_I...specifications

Sorry according to ASUS website your motherboard doesn't support AM3 CPU's at all..

Edit: The best he can do is the original Phenom 1 X3 and X4 CPU's Phenom II's are not even listed as compatible with his board.

My system specs have been updated, using CPU-Z. So overclocking is not recommend on my board using my processor?

looks like it is an AM2+ board so there might be hope.

You might could crossflash it to another Asus board if they are similiar enough and the other Asus has Phenom II support.

also you motherboard can support a 6 core Opteron according to this (probably Phenom I based)

All of which is still a terrible idea because the board is junk for anything but stock.
Just because it supports something does not mean we should go slapping everything possible on it.
My Mobo supports Phenom II X6 processors but I wouldnt put one on here because the rest of the board isnt really good enough to handle it under heavy load. Even without overclocking my Mosfets would probably fail and even if they didnt, overclocking a 6 core would be miserable and weak.

Should I buy a 1090T because my board supports it? Or should I make sure I have a computer to use 6 months from now?

if he gets a quad core processor he shouldn't overclock it, which is one of the things he asked

Just trying to give the guy some options if they are still out there. Of course its a better idea to buy a new motherboard but some people won't take heed to that advice.
