If you think it is easy, feel free to make your own case and sell it. Some people have done that - see Lan Gear. The guy that started it (username mattinv in some forums) wanted a nice SFF case that could take high end hardware in the smallest volume possible but didn't see anything currently (then) available that he liked, so he designed his own, and then paid for them to be manufactured in small volumes, and sold them. How hardcore is that?
Ok, I took this pretty seriously, I now want to build the perfect case(s), heres the nitty gritty stuff:

Name:
Help me think of one

Inspirations:
Fractal Design, Syrillian and Little Devil

Versions:
Aluminum with "naked" interior
Aluminum with black interior
Steel with "naked" interior
Steel with black interior

Windows: Yes, they are available.

Builder:
Mass order to Lian Li / Mountain Mods / Local Shop

Size:
Bigger than a Fractal Design Arc, smaller than a 650D.

CPU Heatsink space:
175mm clearance

WC Options:
max 360mm rad in the top
max 240mm rad in the front
max 240mm rad in the bottom

GPU Space:
Will fit a 6990 with both hdd cages installed.

Pricing:
Steel version will be competitive with Fractal Design in price.
Aluminum version will be competitive with Lian Li in price.
10% discount for OCN'ers

Form Factor:
Mid-Tower, plans to expand to Full-Tower once this gets popular

Motherboard Configuration:
ATX, mATX in the standard configuration. Plans to have a 90 degrees motherboard rotation version once this gets popular

Design:
Styling cues from Mountain Mods, Lian Li, Fractal Design and Corsair. No front door in case you were wondering.

Fans:
2x 120mm / 140mm Front
3x 120mm / 140mm Top
1x 120mm / 140mm Rear
2x 120mm / 140mm Side
2x 120mm / 140mm Bottom

Ideas for Fans:
Fractal Design's ModuVent for all fan mounts
Dust filters for all fan mounts
Fan Grills for all fan mounts
Case will not come with fans, but I will give you the option for me to buy the fans myself and install them into the case.

Noise Dampening Foam:
Everywhere and anywhere possible

Expansion Slots:
8.

External bays:
3x 5.25 bays
2x 3.5 bays (these serve as Front connectors bays)

Internal bays:
6x 3.5 HDD's & 4x 2.5 SSD's
The 2 drive racks and both are removable, can be moved for facing outwards and inwards.

Tool-less:
Lian Li's PCI, 3.5, 5.25, fan installation systems.

Cable Management:
Lots of Rubber Grommets for cables
Lian Li's cable clamp
1 or 1.5 inch of space between side panel and motherboard tray.

Misc:
Huge cpu opening.

Help me think of more ideas to improve my "vision"

there's ALOT of designing involved just to let you know

you should start out with some drawings or sketchup sketches just to get an idea of what you want
post #4 of 23
Also, being competitive with mass-produced cases will require you to short hand yourself on the amount you get payed for your time.

And I agree with Mr.Pie, do some work with drawing and concepts, and see what you can fit in. Then do a cost analysis, and see if it actually viable to sell these (IE, will people buy them at the price you set, and is that price enough profit for you?)

Before you start this, you might want to think about the demand for something like this, it could be huge, but you don't know that for sure. Considering there are places like MountainMods and Fractal Designs. Also, your 10% discount could end up reducing your profit margin by 50%... just a heads up. Of course, that depends on your final price.

As for ideas to add to your "vision:"

Hot-swappable drive bays?
Option for external HDD installation: putting the HDD in a case like thing with a handle that allows for easy transport with a protective cover (an add-on to the hot-swappable bays)

I have 3 cases in store:

B1
"Small tower" atx, 2x 240 rads in top and front. Competes with the godly Lian Li A05N

B2
Mid Tower, fits 2x 360 rads in top and front. Competes with 650D.

B3
Full Tower, fits 2x 480 rads in top and front. Competes with 800D.

Hotswap:
Maybe a drive dock like the 690 II Advanced?

this

you'll have to do alot ALOT of testing involved to make sure everything is ship shape and good if you intend to sell

its not as easy as everyone thinks, you have to really think carefully
It also isn't a 1 month project or a few weeks project
you'll need to constantly check, double check and triple check everything's perfect

I don't know how to model / 3d render. So far my drawings are pretty ghetto, Pen+Paper for me.
