AM2+ AM3 Difference?

Thread Starter
I've been thinking about upgrading my AMD Phenom ii x2 550 to an AMD Phenom ii x4 955 Black edition but my motherboard claims to have an AM2+ socket where as the 955 only uses AM3. So my question is, what's the difference between the AM2+ and AM3? Also, why can my motherboard run the 550 if that processor only uses AM3 sockets?

Extra question: Is the thermal pad that comes with the heat sink good enough? If it isn't, what thermal paste would you recommend?

Thanks in advanced, first post by the way. biggrin.gif

Don't use the stock HSF. Get an arctic cooler for $20 from newegg. AM2+ uses DDR2, AM3 uses DDR3. Your CPU is AM3. AM3 is backwards compatible with AM2/AM2+ due to having a DDR2 memory controller as well as a DDR3 memory controller.

EDIT: You should fill out your system specs in your profile so we can see what kind of hardware you have.

This. But get any aftermarket cooler. That is a good budget one smile.gif

The Quad core series are fine for gaming.

The biggest difference is the DDR3 controller build in.

Also the architecture for AM3 cpu's are 45 nm.
