5850 CF 16x/4x problems?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I got another 5850 (xfx non-reference) to run in CF with my 5850 (sapphire non-reference). This is my first time going CF and I have to admit i'm really dissapointed. Every game I tried seems to have low FPS, while fraps says otherwise. V-sync fixes this problem but makes my mouse lag (forced, with triple buffering). I do see a difference in 3Dmark 11 scores; P6648 vs P4444.

Both cards run perfect in a single card setup.

Now my mobo has an odd CF scaling of 16x/4x. Could this be the cause? Another weird thing is that GPU-Z says the 4x lane is v1.1 while ASUS specs say both lanes are v2.0.

I already tried:
Different drivers( 11.4, 11.2, 11.1a, 10.5) incl. driversweeper in safe mode
D3DOverrider
Afterburner Fan profile fix
Swapping cards top to bottom
different CF bridges

Thanks.

Microstutter. 16/4 isn't the issue.

If it's microstutter, then no. Microstutter appears because the two cards aren't generating perfectly synced frames. It's one of the downsides to having 2 cards.

This will explain it better:

Hey man - I've been running a 16x / 4x setup since the start.
So as posted above - that shouldn't be the issue. You boards bios up to date?

Not too sure if its just microstutter since I get unplayable FPS in Dragon Age 2 if I disable vsync.

Monitor the gpu usage graph in afterburner while gaming.
See what that second cards usage is running.
Likely a combination of MS and the 16x card waiting on the 4x card.

I ran 16/4x for about 10 days, for the most part it was fine, but there were noticeable slowdowns on occasions.
