What's the fastest SSD under $1k ?

Thread Starter
I was first convinced that the new 250GB Intel SSD 510 was meant to be the fastest, but someone convinced me that the 256GB Corsair Performance P3 is the best. I found this SSD performance comparison that confirmed this.

I've read that the Corsair P3 256GB claims Read:480MB/s, Write: 315MB/s. Yeah I know that's sequential maximum and doesn't represent normal performance. What else can we use to compare one against another though? I think that performance chart I linked to above seems to do all the research I need. I just want to get some feedback here on what y'all experts think.

I know that when I switched from a regular 7200rpm 2.5" 500GB hard drive to my current Intel X25-M G2 160GB, the performance difference was substantial and clearly measurable (one copy of a virtual machine's 23GB VHD file which took 28 minutes on HDD dropped to below 8 minutes on the Intel). I'm expecting my next SSD to halve the time again.

You could probably build something with a decent controller and a few standard drives that would be faster, though.

I read about that, the feedback scares me (especially the guy who bought 4 and 3 of them failed). I should have qualified my question to restrict it to 2.5" standard form factor. Although I'm building it into a PC, I might well find myself upgrading in a year or two to something much faster and I'd then want to drop this current one into my laptop (or something).

Comparing random 4k reads and writes is a good idea.

I can wait, because I can initially build my Intel X25-M G2 160GB into the new rig (and clone it to the new drive when I get it).

How long to wait though ? and what am I waiting for the most? The C400?

What about this SSD performance comparison, is it a good one to use as my guide to what's best ?

Indeed a good method but be aware of the fact that some drives score higher on other parts of test like ATTO bench. you could also try an OCZ revodrive x2 ^^ super fast with the 32mm chip with degrades slower than the smaller chips (as they need more buffer 2 make up for it) ^^

That's only 1 test. Anandtech have series of tests on different SSD's and comparison to other models. Only thing is, The database is not updated. They only have a few on the list.
