[HELP] Artifacts on 8800GTX

Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

Hope you can help me out on this one, I'm pretty sure I will have to buy a new GPU because of this problem, but before spending any money I wanted to have an opinion from people who have greater experience than me (Rig. Specs in my signature)

Last Wednesday I was trying out the Crysis 2 beta when suddenly my computer crashed and I had a blue screen. Restarted it and everything was ok; on Thursday I decided to give it another go but this time, when I started playing, the computer froze so I had to manually shut it off. When I restarted it, I got all sorts of artifacts on screen right from startup, in the BIOS and obviously in Windows 7. I have already tried installing new drivers for the 8800GTX but that did not help, furthermore from the 1920x1200 native screen resolution of my 24" monitor it has now reset to 640x408 and cannot be changed.

I suspect its the video cards RAM that has gone bad, here are a couple of pics. of the artifacts I get on screen:

(Here you can clearly see the resolution being fixed at 640x408)

P.S. I have OPSEC'd some of the personal data, hence those squares added in paint.

Cheers.

Yeah at that point if you have no warranty, bake it.

Yea baking would be your best option. But remember it won't fix your card permanently so you should consider a replacement ASAP.

If it wasn't for the link I would have thought you guys were joking ! I think I might give it a go, since the gpu is an ASUS EN8800GTX and AFAIK the warranty is 3 years and I bought it in 2007 so I can't RMA it.

In case I need to change it what do you guys think would be the best option out of these three solutions ?

- 1x Nvidia GTX 570
- 2x Nvidia GTX 460 SLI
- 2x Ati Radeon HD 6850 CrossFire

Cheers and thanks for the help.

Theoretically, it would work until he gets the card up to or above 90C again.

Try putting it in the oven, or using the self bake method.

Which is to remove the heatsinks on the card, slot it in a PCIe slot and let the core get hot.

The solder will re-flow itself that way, and its safer than the oven method because only the core gets heated; other parts are unaffected.
