Slimdown Ubuntu

Thread Starter
Alright fellas. I had a extra computer laying around, here are the specs.

S478 Pentium 4 3.06Ghz HT
Diamond Stealth ATI Radeon 9250
1.5GB DDR1 RAM
& a 80GB HDD.

Well, I installed 10.10 on it. Went great. But the problem is, it's sort of slow... I was wondering if there was a way to strip the fat off of it to make it run a bit faster.

This computer basically sits in the corner and when running XP on it, I used TeamViewer to connect to it and do whatever I needed to with it. I thought about putting Ubuntu on it and I did. But it's slow, slower than XP...

Any tips on how to strip the fat from it? Or is there another linux derivative that I should think about putting on it? Any help would be great.

Linux mint is lighter... you might want to try that.

Linux Mint 10 or Linux Mint Debian?
I'm thinking Linux Mint 10 since it's based off Ubuntu and it would be easy for me to install TeamViewer since they have a .deb package for it. Not to mention, I've diddled with Ubuntu since 7.X days, it's became pretty easy to me lol.

EDIT: Which to go with? KDE? LXDE RC?

lubuntu or Mint LXDE would work well. Low resource DE.

Yeah, I'm looking for whatever would have the least amount of resources. I would go to Ubuntu 9.04 since it has always been fast to me, but it isn't supported much anymore.

Many to choose from.

Xubuntu will be fine. Any XFCE distro actually. LXDE is one of the lightest desktop environments, but Lubuntu is also missing a lot of stuff from Ubuntu. For a reason obviously.

I've always felt that Xfce was too... resource hog-y for me. I don't know, just me then?

I'll try them out. Downloading a lubuntu & linux mint 10 lxde ISO now.
Possibly download Xubuntu too and make a multiple distro liveUSB lol and test them all.

Eeep. You'll see a slight performance loss doing a live USB trial... Care...
