Can't get the mirror-like finish to my case...

Thread Starter
I've tried 2 cases and both just came out "glossy black"...
It's got a very blurry reflection, so I guess you can say it's kinda mirror like but from what I've seen in pictures, I'm way off.

What am I doing wrong? Here's what I do:
1. Sand original paint
2. 2 coats of Primer (sand in between)
3. 2 coats of paint (sand imperfections)
4. 2 Clear coats
5. Wait 48 hours and buffer polish with rubbing compound

I've seen the "wax" step but ppl say wait 30 days...I haven't done that, is that what I'm missing? Does wax make the big difference in mirror shine and just slightly glossy? Or am I doing something else wrong also?

I'm thinking about doing chrome next...any tips are welcome, thanks.

there are a few painters in here. i would send off the case and have them power coat it. or try your local paint shop.

What paint are you using and grit are you sanding at? You don't need sand the primer. After the actual paint coat or clear coat you need to wait at least two weeks for the paint to cure properly. If you apply the clear coat you have to wait at least 48 hours before painting over the paint.
I think that's where you went wrong, the paint wasn't fully cured.

Then you wet sand the paint like you would lapping. The lowest I would go would be 800 grit then move up continuously up to 2000. 2500 grit if you want to be nit picky, but the buffing/rubbing compound should clean that up after you are done lapping. Just keep going at it with the rubbing compound and buffer. until you achieve the look.

The wax is there for added protection and shine.

Thanks, I think that might be it, I usually wait like 4-5 hours tops lol before the clear coat. I'm just using over the counter stuff from Menards (home improvement store), I think rust-o-leum glossy black.

Wet sanding is the only way to get the really intense shine. I suggest 1500-2000 gtrit sandpaper, unless you have bad orange peel in which case you may have to start with 1000 and go to the finer stuff.
Also, I would wait a while before sanding or polishing the clear coats, it takes a little while to cure.

Between which steps should I wet sand? Between paint and clear coats?
