Depends on how nice you want it to be.

Get the base coat (color) down, then 2 coats of clear, then wet sand, then another 1 layers of clear, wetsand, repeat.
It takes a lot of time because you have to wait a day or 2 after you lay each coat of clear, but thats now you get the really nice effect.
The one you lay the final clear coat, wait a few months before polishing it.

Yah its all about the clear, just remember, if you get it nice and smooth on the last few coats, dont sand it, just wait for a few months and polish and it will shine like crazy.
If you polish to early it will get swirls.
