netgear wndr3400 n600 connect probs

Thread Starter
i just purchased a netgear n600 wndr 3400. i have 3 computers and a coupple other devices like smartphones connected to my old network. the old router was a d-link dir 615 and is a workhorse. this netgear router was obtained in the hopes that the 2 laptops in the house would be able to connect at 300mbps instead of the 130 mbps on the dlink. also connected is a desktop rig using a dlink dir556 pci-e wifi adapter. (works great btw so long as you use the atheros drivers).

anyway, i have set up both bands on this n600 to use wpa2 using AES only and for whatever i do, i can only achieve 300mbps from both bands on any one machine for about 1 min, then the speed drops to 130 again. whenever i refresh the settings in the web based router menu i get the same outcome. full speed then 1 min after, back down to 130.

i sure could use some insight here, i know that i am getting 90 - 100% signal but i am just not maintaining a stable 270-300mbps.confused.gif

side note, the desktop with the pci-e wifi adapter is running win xp pro sp3, one laptop is a dell xps 1730 running vista ultimate, and the other is a samsung running win 7 home. the laptops have their built in intell wifi N cards.

I have this router and hated it till i put dd-wrt on it. I dont have any problem using any connection speed but never did to begin with.

might look into this. flashing dd-wrt to netgear is super easy. Just do a 30/30/30 reset then flash then 30/30/30 after.

do a bit of light reading at the links below before attempting. but dd-wrt is so legit.

ok i looked up the hard reset but so far as i can tell dd-wrt does not have a compatable build for the wndr3400. is this true or will the 3300 or 3700 build be compatible?

30/30/30 = hold reset for 30 seconds while powered on then remove power while still holding reset and continue to hold reset with power off for 30 seconds. then plug power back in and keep holding reset for 30 more seconds. This completely wipes the cache and resets the firmware to default settings.

as for a firmware. Do not flash a firmware from another model. They almost always have slight differences which require tweaking of the firmware. And once you flash poorly it can be bricked. Ask on the forums what to use or try to find out how much nvram you router has and what the chipset is. Tell me that and i can help a bit more
