SMART Failure predicted imminent

Hi,

I've read these forums for a while but have suddenly had a problem today regarding my HDD.

I booted up today to get this SMART Error message which tells me pretty blatantly that my hard drive is about to die. I've backed up my important data however I would really like to resolve this problem, if i can, without replacing the HDD.

I've run HD Tune Pro and got these results:

Any ideas on how this could be remedied? Would a reformat fix this issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You can't fix it. The only viable solution is to replace the drive. Anything you do would be a temporary fix at best. Sorry as I know that isn't what you want to hear, but it's what you NEED to hear.

Sorry, your data point to an issue most likely with the read/write heads on the drive. There's nothing you can do at this point but backup and RMA.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've backed up all my files and will be ordering a replacement hard drive tomorrow.

Have you got any recommendation's on a HDD that would be more reliable than the Samsung one that came pre-installed within the laptop?

Don't you have a warranty?!

WDC or Hitachi would be my recommendations for laptop hard drives. Avoid Toshiba, Fujitsu, and Seagate drives. They don't hold up that well.

If you have the time to deal with an RMA try that. It should be under warranty.

I've got a Dell Inspirion 1555 and the warranty ran out last month, have had it just over a year.

Thanks for the advise regarding WDC and Hitachi, is there anything I have to look out for when buying a new drive apart from the fact it needs to be 2.5"? I've put together a desktop tower before but I've never really messed about with laptop components.

Oh, I always get the 3-year extended warranty with next-day service. The last time I had to use it, Dell overnighted me a new hard drive and a shipping label to send back the old one. I definitely recommend it....for next time.

There might still be some warranty left through the drive manufacturer though so it would be worth contacting Samsung about it.

The only other things to be concerned with aside from the 2.5" is the Z Height which needs to be 9.5MM thick (it's highly doubtful that a 12.5MM thick drive will fit), that it is SATA, and are you more concerned with speed or battery life. 5400 rpm drives like the Western Digital Scorpio Blues will usually extend how long the battery will last between charges while 7200 rpm drives like the Scorpio Blacks will perform better, but will often times run the battery down a bit quicker. It isn't a huge amount of difference, but it could knock 10 to 20 minutes off of a run time. The SAMSUNG HM500JI (5400rpm) you now have would be very similar to a WDC Scorpio Blue as far as performance and battery usage.
