Core Temp question

Thread Starter
I've been using core temp to monitor my cpu temps lately. I have a amd phenom II x6 1090T CPU at stock speeds being cooled by the Corsair H50.

Core temp shows the temperature usually between 15*C and 20*C while running VLC and a few tabs of chrome. When its totally idle and not being used, i've seen temps down to 8*C. Is this reading correctly? Almost everywhere else I've read, people have idle temps in the 20s in *C with practically the same setup as me. Is there some type of offset or something?

Also, in the past couple days core temp has been randomly popping up with a high temp of 74*C. There is no increase in the monitored temp, but the high temp will suddenly jump to 74*C. Even running prime95 after installing the H50, the temps under load only got to about 45-50*C, so this isn't making much sense to me. It seemed to start happening after I used speedfan to control my fans. So i changed everything in speedfan back to default settings for it hoping it would do the trick. But core temp still does the same thing randomly. Is this just a glitch or could my CPU really be getting that hot all of a sudden? I've tried to search this issue with no luck so far. Thanks for any help you can provide...I just don't want to damage my PC

Well let me ask you this, does it sound right to you that the room temperature is probably more like 18C-22C, and your computer, a machine which constantly draws power then expells it as heat is 10 degrees colder than that? (Although you could be living in a cold-room, or have some sort of ice-maker in your tank then I'd have egg all over my face)

As far as I know people have been moving away from coretemp because it is no longer able to report properly. Use HWMonitor or some other competitor, and I'm guessing you'll suddenly find yourself with much higher and more stable temps. I'm pretty sure all your problems are from coretemp.

good deal, ill try out HWMonitor. But yeah, that's why i was so suspicious of those temp readings. I mean, it's always between 17-20*C in my room, and easily down below 15*C overnight because i sleep with my windows open and heating vent shut. I like the cold. lol but it still seemed weird that the temps were so low in Core Temp. Thanks for the reply, appreciate the help. :-)

Edit: Downloaded and am using HWMonitor now. Core temps at idle are around 16*C using any of the programs and got up to 36*C at the highest after 2 hours of prime95. So I'm guessing these are just the actual temps, i was just skeptical of them being so low. But HWMonitor hasn't had any huge temp jumps like i described in Core Temp so I'm going to assume that was a bug with the Core Temp program.

I'm still a bit skepetical myself, as X6s are usually pretty power hungry, but if that's what you're getting, that's what you're getting. And to you I say congrats
Sounds like you got yourself a real golden chip there.

I have the same issue with my 1055T. HWmontior shows arround 30C idle, and Coretemp was showing 17-18C. turns out that Core temp has a problem reading the temps on some chips, and it has a built in feature to offset the display temp. in my case i made my offset +11C.

just go to Options>Adjust Offset, and try to get it the same as HWmonitor.

its not quite as accurate as other programs, but i like to see the desktop widget display

The thing is that all 3 of the programs--Core Temp, Speedfan, HWMonitor--read the same temps all the time, so i can only assume theyre correct. Unless they arent correct and id have to find out an offset and apply it to all 3? I took a screenshot of all 3 programs monitoring temp side by side, but haven't got a clue how to post it straight from my hard drive on here. lol

It seems everyone with the thuban chip has the same core temp issues i have had. i checked with the author a while back and there were some things i could do on my phenom II 965 at that time like to disable the acc in bios. i also have 2 gigabyte boards and one asus board , 890fx and 790fx respectively. the asus board and probe II were fine in temp monitoring. but the gigabyte boards, still, have some issues with the 1090T.
i had it straight without offsets until i put in a ssd and now i am back to the +11 of 12 offset to get a guesstimate based on prior performance, which was also mostly based on faith as well, but seemed to be pretty close
not sure why the core temp was right on, in approximate terms, without offsets since the latest update to v1. now i am back to the offset of +12c. only because i am thinking the processor will be running in the same environment, same oc (19.5 boost and 18 first since gigabyte allows to clock separately) only have the bus speed to 206 to get a max 3.979 or 997 on boosted 3 cores. prime 95 runs are only 30mins long for me since i dont usually have long term stress in gaming. i get ok mark 2003 scores of 78000 more or less in the few latest tests. unique heaven is at 985 with most other things on the computer left on in win7 x84 ulitmate. i did not undo aero or any boosting for performance and dont really think it would have changed my outcome much.
neither gpu or cpu got near to max heat in my boxes which are very well ventilated with plenty of fans on controllers and some very good but loud at high speed doing their jobs quickly when needed. panaflo 3k and the ultra kaze 2500 rpm in the rear and on the big cooler heat sink.
i wish i could be sure of how my core temp results finally work out. i just dont get near the burning point with gpu or cpu though i have plenty of stress worrying that something may go wrong. my 8gigs of gskill cl 7,8,7 ddr3 1600 set to those specs despite the board trying to insist they should be 1333. i fixed that issue day 2 after building it. they can get warm but no more. i have a probe in there which show it getting to 105ยบ but a few seconds of my ultra kaze pulling air out the back drop the temp to less than body temp. board temp is often listed in hw monitor or pc wiz 2011 all of which seem to use the same temp for cpu as core temp many of my monitors/sensors are by the same group though so not hard to understand.
i guess i am agreeing with those who have the thuban chips on their instincts to offset as the app suggests -wide range of temps to guess from. my issues with the phenom II went away when i disabled the acc/core unlock which is of no use in either the thuban or the phenom II 965 since there are none to open.
dont know what will happen with those new 960s which have potentially 2 cores to open. but they are a new set of stories with new updates to address them
