[AnandTech] Apple iPad 2 GPU Performance Explored: PowerVR SGX543MP2 Benchmarked - Page 3

This whole threads pointless since Apple aren't interested in specs anymore, who cares what the cpu/gpu performance of an ipad2 is if they don't?

It's software and usability for Apple, shame they come up short on software and features.

Because we want to know what it'll be like? Having an SGX543MP2 allows for massive improvements in graphic quality in games. That's a plus.

I disagree here, but nonetheless... iOS 5 should be great.

You guys have way too big of a problem with Apple.
I myself am just not a fan of their marketing: promoting ignorance to specs in computers, which is exactly what we don't need.

No. Just no. Don't put words into my mouth.

Tegra 2 was released January 2010, but the SGX543 was Jan 2009.

Anyways, the problem with the SGX543mp2 is that if devs even try to use it, what will happen to the fragmentation argument?

I also have to point out that the benchmark shows the iPad 2 at 170 MFLOPS, vs the Tegra 2 at 1.5ghz does 48 mflops. I then looked at iPad benchmarks and sure enough they do more mflops then the Tegra 2. Just strange...

Another thing: WHERE DID HE GET GLBENCHMARK 2.0? I really wanted to test it out on my sisters iPad 2 and I could only find GLBenchmark 1.1.
You realize that you still haven't constructed a logical argument yet, right?

Although the numbers for the Xoom don't make sense to me from a technical stand point, I would lean more towards this benchmark lacking certain compatibility or "optimization" issues with the new Tegra, than I would call fake results on Anandtech anyday.

Anandtech is one legitimate source of information over the last few years I actually will still believe things from.

The demos, benchmarks, and numbers from nVidia themselves really overshadow this one benchmark to be honest, time will tell. I would prefer a 3rd party benchmark that was optimized for both architectures personally.

Very good increase though on performance from iPad though. They are getting there.

Optimux 2X run android 2.2 too.

The dates you quoted for those processors are press release dates. It doens't mean that they are last gen, sure the companies have something in development, but these chips the latest being used in devices right now so they are both current gen

First of all, the SGX543 was announced, not released in 01/2009. The argument is see you making here, is that since the Tegra 2 was "released" later, it should be a better performer... which is completely ridiculous. Give this article a read as to why the SGX543 is more superior to the Tegra 2 -> http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/di...article?page=2 .
It may also tell you why Sony chose to use the SGX543 in the XPERIA Play and a variant of it in the NGP rather than the Tegra 2. Simply put, the Tegra 2 is lackluster compared to the PowerVR's current-gen offerings.

EDIT: I'm no Apple fan. I own no Apple hardware at all, and rather limitedly use its software, if ever. I have a Zune HD, which packs a Tegra, if you all don't remember, so I'm not harping on the Tegra 2 just because I don't like it, it's because I genuinely believe NVIDIA could have brought more out of it.

A. The only results thus far for the iPad 2 according to the GLBenchmark website are for 1.1 and it shows 59.5 FPS vs 55 FPS. I also noticed how well the SGX 540 actually is in regards to higher resolutions(http://www.glbenchmark.com/phonedeta...tgroup=overall) which so you know the Meizu M9 has a 960x640 screen and only lost about 5FPS for a gain of 230,400 pixels. Then I saw this(http://www.glbenchmark.com/phonedeta...tgroup=overall) This one got me, though I'm willing to bet its kind of like a 480>580 kind of improvement on the architecture.

B. Theres no B.

Where did I say anything that you said I have? I just made a honest reply to the fact that the Tegra 2 isn't new and being honest I also pointed on the SGX 543 was out in Jan 2009, was it just announced? IDK it says released and Jan 2010 is the date for the Tegra 2 and Jan 2009 is the date for the SGX543.

The Xperia Play is going to have a Snapdragon which equates to it using whatever Adreno GPU, but I think this is your mistaking the PSP 2 for the Xperia Play. Also, Sony has actually said nothing of the processor besides Quadcore CPU, Quadcore GPU.
