How tight should the CPU block be? - Page 2

using the cross pattern, uneven spread on the thermal compound, and uneven tightening could be bad

Thread Starter
Well, when I crank it down to where the springs are almost fully compressedl, it really spreads the TIM out!

I did the "rice grain" in the middle, and it spreads it evenly across the CPU, and most of it off the edge. barely any actually remains between the water block and CPU.

I guess that is a pretty good indicator that I'm getting it tight enough, and that I did a good enough job lapping the CPU.

Thanks for the input, I wasn't sure if it was ok to crank it down that hard, but I wasn't cranking it down far enough to fully flatten out the bow in the water block against the CPU.

I probably should have paid more attention to this before I actually had the system all the way together. Redoing this a number of times with the loop connected is a PITA....

I have the same question as the OP. Same block too. I have read that tightening the block too much can bend and even break the motherboard. But what about the cpu itself? Its being compressed with all that pressure.

What I did was turn the thumb nuts the same amount doing a cross (X) pattern. One corner then the opposite corner like an X. When it started getting quite tight I stopped. The thumb nuts should be just about the same.. I then just used a caliper and made the distance from the top of the thumb nut to the top of the screw.

Again- I dont know if this is the right way or know when to stop tightening. If all else fails, if its too loose you can always tighten (if temps are bad). But if you tighten it too much, something bad may happen then its too late
