Alienware upgrade M15x?

Thread Starter
I have an Alienware laptop, the m15x and I want to upgrade one or two things, the laptop is good as is but needs a few extra bits for the future. I want to upgrade the graphics card and maybe the processor. I upgraded the hard drive from a pathetic 200gb to 1tb which cost me about £80 and Dell quoted £350!! JUST for the hard drive. So I want to know if the laptops have the same sockets as a regular PC motherboard, I have an i5 in the laptop but if I wanted to shove say my i7 from my PC would that even work? Are they the same sockets? It's a stupid question but if it is it would save some serious cash doing it without Dell!

I wanted to take my GTX480 to bits if I get the 580 to put in the laptop, is it possible or not? If not anyone know of anywhere I can get any parts? I hate going through Dell, they are useless when it comes to customer service! Apart from sending/replacing my 4th Dell Streak free of charge after screen damage haha

No you can't put desktop parts into a laptop. They are different sockets and different voltages. If you want new parts you either need to go through dell, somehow get your hands on laptop parts which are incredibly hard to find, or sell your laptop and buy a new one.

You can sorta put a desktop gpu into a laptop using vidock or a diy vidock: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gami...periences.html

If you dont want to go that path, you can buy a mxm compatible laptop gpu and put it in your m15x, also replace your cpu too.

But no offense, I dont think you should try, unless you put alot of time into researching how to upgrade your m15x, as you're obviously inexperienced with laptops and you will be voiding the warranty if you try to change out the gpu or cpu..

I'm inexperienced with laptops. I can strip one down and put it together quickly (not difficult) but never knew the socket names (not due to ignorance) my main job was/is on servers and desktops, never worked with laptops and I always said if I ever bought a laptop I'd only get Alienware and this is my first laptop. I don't care about the warranty, Dell are useless as it is anyway. My dvd drive was faulty and after 2-3 months waiting they finally sent a technician round and told him I had a Dell desktop so he didn't have the right parts with him (one reason I don't like contacting Dell)

It was just a question out of curiosity, I would only have done it if it was 100%. I have actually found hundreds (to my surprise) Alienware parts, so I think I'll be getting those if I decide on it.

should have gone sager/clevo and you would have been much better off with the upgrade path.
