2nd build ever-would like some tips, advice

Thread Starter
UPDATE 03/16/11: Ok so I have gotten a new motherboard. Which was actually one that was recommended here in the thread. The Asus M4A67td EVO. It seems like this will help with the VRM issue. Its a pretty nice mobo.

Problem: I was looking through the manual and to my surprise it doesnt seem to support my ram??????????????? At least in my configuration-4x4gb dimms. So I also tried to do a simple overclock to 3.8ghz which should have been cake since I have the h50 on it. and plenty of fans. But It only lasted about 1 min then bsod. changed all timings and ram freq back to auto. Only raised the cpu freq to get it to 3.8 everything else auto---- Bsod.

Im guessing ram is the prob here?

CPU-Z ID reading my ram like this.

RAM : 16384 MB DDR3 Dual Channel
RAM Speed : 668.9 MHz (3:10) @ 9-9-9-24
Slot 1 : 4096MB (10700)
Slot 1 Manufacturer : G.Skill
Slot 2 : 4096MB (10700)
Slot 2 Manufacturer : G.Skill
Slot 3 : 4096MB (10700)
Slot 3 Manufacturer : G.Skill
Slot 4 : 4096MB (10700)
Slot 4 Manufacturer : G.Skill

and even though it currently shows 3.2ghz its validating with this....

Any help appreciated...

You may want to look at this thread, http://www.overclock.net/amd-motherb...hase-list.html
locate your mobo and see for yourself what we recommend as far as OC'ing.
I hate to be the one to have to say this but... well take a look for yourself.

For more info have a look at this thread as well http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/94...hy-choose.html

Awe man is this mobo a possible fire hazard? had good reviews on newegg. and it wasnt too expensive which is why i got it. Or did someone just up the voltage to high on a defective board?

also, Im running the Firepro V7800 like i said in the first post. Its a workstation gpu mainly for cad and animation related work. I do video editing in premier and use maya 2011 so its great.

the comp seems to be running flawlessly right now. temps are great.

so am i sol with this board then? I guess i just ate some money there. Wish these types of recommendations would appear on newegg. I went through the reviews and really didnt hear these types of issues. It says it supports phenom II processors so why wouldnt MSI cut some more cash to do the proper testing. If this is case then I may just have to suck it up and leave it stock. But i was hoping to do something to it, especially since i got the h50.

The motherboard itself is fine, but the VRM phases (the various whatnot surrounding your socket) are not up to the task of high OCs; there have been reports of... bad things happening to mobos like these.
The good reviews may be for people running this board with <95W CPUs. This board and variants are capable of failing on 125W processors at stock. Since you don't have the stock cooler either and there is absolutely no cooling to the VRMs/MOSFETs (which instantly triples the danger), I would try and take off a good chunk of voltage and perhaps even clock speed along with it.

wow i just cant believe that this is that serious. This sucks i just drained 100 bucks into something that will not perform as advertised. I have twice the recommended case cooling going on that should count for something right?

Spent $100!? Newegg I presume? Yikes, that sucks. If you're within the 15 day non-defective return guarantee, capitalize it. Get this board which is much better for the same price
