Should i get a new mainboard? - Page 2

Thread Starter
Ive been studying some charts and i think im gonna follow your advice and wait for the bulldozer as making a 100% increase in performance would be way too expensive, apparently from the 7850BE to the Phenom x2 550BE there is not much difference...

No, the 550BE can run on AM2+ boards provided supported in BIOS (i.e. update it).
Ahh. Thanks XD. Ya I had no clue there was an update for those sockets.

Ha, in light of this, you can disregard anything I said about a temp upgrade to an AM3 motherboard Octohedron! Still, Microcenter usually has some of the best processor prices if you have one near you. But, since you don't require an AM3 mb for the X2, if you are still looking at getting this processor, I would totally wait for AM3+ chipsets to drive AM3 mb prices down, then grab one. I feel that there will be some decent price drops of AM3 in the next few months.

There is indeed some difference. But you would definitely see better results from a newer quad or hexcore (especially since games/applications will be starting to utilize more than 2 cores in their coding on a more universal basis relatively soon). I mean, even if you just spent $50 more for a Phenom II X4, you be making a sizeable leap from the X2.
