Slow HD speed with new mobo

Hey guys im finally back on my good computer after months of asus sending me bad boards. This new one is working fine for everything but the HDD performance is really slow for some reason. I have a 80 and 500 with the 80 running the os. The os is pretty slow to respond to hd queries and even the brand new 500 take almost a full second or more to open folders. I have the drives set to IDE in the bios and have installed chipset drivers. What could be my problem any help here guys?

A Virus scanner can greatly reduce the speed of copying files btw...

You should use HD Tune to test your HDD to ensure there isn't any problem..

How fast is your 80 GB HDD? 7200 RPM?

I don't use anything less than 7200 RPM SATA HDD in my computers, I have learned my lesson the hard way...

If your hard drive is being turned off by your power saving settings this can make a major pause before it's opened because the HDD is asleep..
