What hard drives are you looking at? What is your budget for purchasing them?

Just get a 1TB Samsung F3. I highly doubt you'll notice a difference in speed thats worth spending double the money if you don't plan on RAIDing.

Ok last question,

Im either going to buy 2x 500GB WD Caviar Black or 2x 320GB Samsung F4's...

so now this is for a photoshop pc which basically does nothing but photoshop and web browsing/email and video editing...

would it be best to put the OS and Photoshop/Premiere on one hard drive, then the photos and videos on the other drive would results in faster loading etc. because its not conflicting with the OS trying to read data etc.

or would it be best for

disk 1: OS and other programs
Disk 2: Photoshop/premiere and the photos/videos?

which would give best performence.?

Best performance would be to put the 2 500GB drives in RAID 0 for double the read/write performance. Windows would see the array as a single 1TB drive; you'd put everything on that.

would the onboard raid thing for the asus p8p67 pro be good enough? or would an thridy party one be needed?

Am i right in saying that Raid 0 is when it treats it as one HDD and just mirrors the data?

Yeah, onboard is fine.

And no, you're thinking of RAID 1. RAID 0 stripes the data across both hard drives, in small block sizes (for example, 128kb). If you had a 50MB file, 25MB would be on one drive and 25MB would be on the other. Windows treats it as one drive though.

Dude whatever you do dont get Western Digital Black Hard Drives, those things suck so so so bad when it comes to raid, there disk head seek goes into low power state and you will no doubt get timeout issues.

Samsungs F series drives will work fine, just make sure to research the drives you looking at buying alot for there raid compatiblitly. It seems to be very hit and miss even this day and age.

Server grade drives should all be fine but cost more, whatever you do dont get any ECO drives or lower power state ones they will always have problems in raid systems.

Goodluck

I was thinking about forgetting raid, the data is too important to risk it. And two hard drives (1 OS and programs and other for files) should be fast enough.

now i just cant decide which performs better between the Samsung Spinpoint f4 320GB or the WD Caviar black 500GB..

help?

Having separate drives is pretty pointless, random OS read/writes don't have a big hit on performance... You may as well get a 1TB spinpoint F3

EDIT: and is 6GB/s worth it over 3GB/s?
In your situation it would be better to buy 2x 500GB drives.

6GB/s is better than 3GB/s drives as the newer 6GB/s drives tend to use newer platter densities.

6GB/s hdds have no performance difference over 3GB/s drives as mechanical drives rarely saturate 1.5GB/s (SATA-1) drives.

No it's not pointless.

If you have multiple sources reading and writing to the same drive it will end up disk thrashing, e.g. if I burn two DVDs from the same drive @ 16x

If you had 2 separate drives it will divide the load.
Shhhhh!
