Is it safe to update MoBo Chipset Drivers?

Thread Starter
I have been getting "stutter" problems on almost everything:

http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/95...ers-games.html

I am thinking that this might be a good way to crossout some MoBo problems..

So, is it safe to update my MSI K9A2 Platinum (most likely V1) Chipset Drivers?

Chipset drivers come with the Catalysts you install for your video card.

Should be current already.

Are you refering to your bios or your windows drivers? i try to keep uptodate with my bios but i had problems when i updated my Chipset drivers... my onboard sound stopped working and one of my PCI slots stopped too. I read through the linked post and it sounds like a PSU issue. you can update your drivers but it might not help.

Chipsets without integrated graphics like AMD 770/790

If you go searching for chipset drivers for the 770X, 790X, or 790FX on AMD's site then it will return a very short list which doesn't include any drivers. That's annoying. And after checking through plenty of Catalyst unified drivers I have yet to find one which lists the 770X, 790X, or 790FX as supported in the release notes. So the only "official" source of chipset drivers for these chipsets appears to be the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard. You can find your motherboard info in CPU-Z just above where it lists your chipset and southbridge.

"Unofficially", the 780G and 790GX both have integrated graphics but are from the same chipset family as the 770X, 790X, and 790FX. If you run a driver package for the 780G or 790GX then it will presumably have the appropriate drivers for your chipset. I don't have the hardware to test this but it appears to be the case. The 780G and 790GX are more commonly called the Radeon HD 3200 and Radeon HD 3300. You don't need to worry about whether to get HD 3200 or HD 3300 drivers because all the ones in this family share a common driver. Just look for drivers for Radeon HD 3300 series and follow the instructions from the next section. Of course, this would be much easier if AMD would just list chipset drivers for the 770X, 790X, and 790FX.

Any idea to double check?

Cpu-Z says it's still revision 00 on my mobo..

+ rep to the latest responses.

Not sure.. I don't think I am referring to the "flashing MoBo BIOS".

I am referring to these:

Regarding the problem on my other thread: I really dk. But my 5870 is working great. Tried a no external power GPU (6200 NV TB) and it still stutters xD.

You can safely update your chipset drivers. Go to your motherboards webpage and download the latest version of the drivers in question, then install them. It's completely software driven. It's not like your trying to flash your bios (which runs a small risk of bricking the board).

There should be some chipset drivers included with the motherboard cd, but it's better to get them off the internet, as the included disk is probably uotdated.
