My Very First

Thread Starter
THis will be my first build. Of course, I'm happy and sad at the same time. I wanted to build something that would be solid for the household. Wife wants something that would be a solid storage for her pictures and files. I will use it for gaming (light.....For Now) and media myself such as music and videos. I do want to make sure that I have it well ventilated and upgradeable for the future if I just so happen to come across easy money later on. I also want it to be solid in speed of course. I just don't want to make these buys without having it critiqued.

Previous computer died which is why I'm getting a crack at this. I want to be happy with the build I have without tossing and turning thinking I spent too much, over did it, didn't make the best choice. I did some searching on these forums which helped me to make better decisions on the power supply, hard drives, and processor. I'll list my parts down here. If anyone has an updated recommendation, just put it down and a nice link to the Newegg/Tigerdirect. Give me a better grasp of what I'm doing before I make a mistake. If I'm marrying this machine, I want to make sure I'm going all in with the pros and cons known before I break it in. One question I have is about the hard drive. Would it make better sense to get a hard drive that had 6.0Gb/s vs. 3.0Gb/s? Are there things that would keep the price around the same that might give me a little more bang for my buck? I'm not looking for fanboy responses but rather logical responses. I am looking for a semi-futureproofing of this system so I can be able to upgrade later on. Appreciate any time spent in this thread reading this mess and even responding in advance.

p.s.-I'm not a softy. Give it to me straight.

As far as I am concerned, that motherboard has 2 useless PCI-e slots.

Thanks much for the input. Was a quick response. I picked up the hard drive for the discount. Was $55 after the code. Was skeptical seeing it was a bulk item but figured that I can always return it and get lucky eventually. I did not take any advice on the casing though because I like the case. The fans were a big push for me to get it. I was going to start looking for a case that had a screen to possibly tell the inside temperature. I figure I could install some type of temperature lcd screen or something that would do just fine. If it can be thought, it can be done basically. Hell, water in a system would have been laughed at years ago. I also like the option of the extra space inside the case for creativity if I feel a little inspired to add things.

I did change the motherboard and picked up the video card. I was looking to keep the 6.0Gb/s but figured that I won't be doing anything that serious to warrant that. The performance difference will probably be moot. Also figured that if push comes to shove, I can always get another motherboard a few years down the road.

My wife was understanding of picking up the video card as opposed to the on-board video card. I was hoping she would be understanding because I didn't have faith in her giving me the benefit of the doubt with this decision. A good video card is quite expensive to the eye so I figured I'd have the on-board there for her to see and then consult Overclock before giving her the better plan. Ironically, she read something that I was reading about on-board graphics vs. a seperate card which really had her already on that bandwagon. I had a few good discount deals. Forgot about the option to look for discounts on Newegg.

Let you know how the build goes. I think the hard drive might come a little later than everything else. If it does, I might just go to this Microcenter by me and pick up something solid to just have the OS on. I was considering getting Windows 7, but hear too much buzz for Windows 8 already which means it's about a year or two away. I think I can definitely wait for the next OS to come out before upgrading the operating system. I do hear that 7 is beautiful though. If Vista is still sloppy to my desires, I might just save money and splurge on a retail copy off eBay or get my brother-in-law to use a student discount somewhere.

I'm also assuming that I might also need to eventually invest in some heatsinks and other things to keep the inners cool? I know that stock is decent but you can get more out of your system with after-market part. I also know that the parts I do have in my system aren't exactly burning rubber on the road. I'm glad I get to finally take up this project though it's at an inconvenient time. Thanks for the help guys (girls??).

7 is basically a good service pack for vista. Vista 64 bit with all of its updates will still work well for a few years.

I would also consider a less expensive chip than the 955. Athlon II quad cores are less than 100, and the Phenom II X4 820 is on sale at newegg right now for 85.

955 is a great chip, but if this is more of an everyday pc it could be overkill and you might end up just paying for OC headroom that you won't use.

There are also good microcenter cpu + motherboard deals I would check out if you are close enough to a microcenter.
