Knowing this, the Q9xxx CPU's, like Q9550 and Q9650 has 12MB of L2 Cache and are capable of 4GHz, this will make a pretty big difference VS you old Q6600@3.6GHz..

Here is a comparison of a Q6600@stock 2.4GHz VS a Q9650@stock 3GHz. This will simulate the jump from 3.6 to 4GHz, more L2 and better core optimizations on the Q9650 VS that Q6600.

As you can see, in fallout 3 the Q9650 has a 19FPS increase over the Q6600. Going from 67FPS on the Q6600 to 86FPS on the Q9650.
with that in mind, his night and day comparison would be correct lol, jumping 2 tech generations would do that, or at least I would hope it would lol

Just my

I think the biggest point to take from this thread, is that upgrading your GPU to get better frames is pointless if you are on a 'older' platform.

The new GPU's simply arent being pushed to their full potential.

I put SLI460's on my my Q9650 and Vs other i5/i7 set-ups it underperformed.

I figured it was due to the SLI configuration, but the results here show otherwise.

I just went from Q9650 to 2600k i7 and all I found is that a couple of games have there fps held back by the Q9650!

I don't say the Q9650 holds my GTX480 back!
It's more like, some games these days could do with a bit more CPU/Ram speed to run as well as they can!

It's a bit like when you run furmark! Your GPU is the bottleneck!
So what I'm saying is, it's down to the game if it's a CPU intensive game or not!

note! My Q9650 was only clocked to 3.8GHz

We can all agree that if running SLI with a GTX 480/570 or GTX 580 definatly would be bottlenecked by a Q9650@4GHz...

But with a single High-end card only a few games, as ACHILEE5 says would get lesser frames VS a i7/Sandy. That said, lesser frames are not the same as not playable.

Yeah, I completely agree with the thought that only some games are highly dependent on the speed of a CPU (GTA4 or Fallout3/NV as examples).

Tried to experiment with my Q9550 and GTX580 on Fallout NV yesterday. When I set my CPU to stock clock FPS was around 30 (Ultra setting), once I overclocked it to ~3.9, FPS increased by 20 (yeah, was 50 then), BUT... GPU usage was as low as before (about 40-50%). So, the conclusion is simple - just because developers couldn't properly code the game engine, it doesn't mean my hardware is awfully slow.

Yeah I could only get 3.75 out of mine, the P5N-D was holding me back, and trying to find a new, decent mobo for 775 is hard.

Battlefield has always been the most intensive game I could find, and I intend to play Battlefield for long time yet, so investing in the best processor available I think is key.

Here is to take mem speed out of the equation when using 775

DDR2-800 vs. DDR3-1333.
Does DDR3-1333 Make Sense?

I just now tried Test Drive Unlimited 2. And on a track I like, I just got 24th in the world
And smashed my old record by 4 seconds
