LOL! So true, so true

Anyway, I can understand those Q6600@3.6GHz owners who claim a difference in several games when going Sandybridge. A Q9550/Q9650 is a good deal faster clock for clock. So I would guess a Q6600 needs to be in the 4.5 - 4.6GHz range to match a Q9550/Q9650 at 4GHz in certain games.

Good job OP for proving the doubters wrong. My Q9550@4ghz was a massive bottleneck on cpu intensives games such BFBC2 and GTA4. The i7 drastically improved min frames and stability.

C2Q are old and slow...unfortunately

I had to find out...

FWIW, my E8400 @ 4Ghz can even achieve 110fps looking into the sky and at the ground, like the video the OP made. I think that beats his Q9650 setup also? Same settings obviously. Plus the E8400 @ 4Ghz can even manage 60% GPU usage on my GTX560.

To everyone who doesnt believe that it makes a big difference, your wrong. Its huge. GTA4 and Just Cause 2 went from pretty choppy to completely unchoppy. FPS in those games basically doubled.

Yep.

I know it's not the same but I upgraded from a q6600 @ 3.5 ghz and I had my geforce 570 in that system. In Tera online I was getting about 20-30 fps which was actually about the same fps I was getting when my 4870 512mb was plugged in. I moved the 570 to my new 2500k system and my fps shot up to 60 fps and didn't drop below 40. On the old system it could drop to 15 in same environments.

The 2500k was at stock speeds too so the q6600 was even clocked 200 mhz higher. My gpu usage in the q6600 system never really went over 58%. On the 2500k at stock speeds it was at about 80% Once I oc'd to 4.6 ghz the gpu usage jumped up even more. I then oc'd to 4.7 ghz and only then did my gpu usage constantly stay at 98-99%. I thought it was very weird, I'd never seen my card run at that load before and my temps jumped up like crazy lol.

lol enable vsync if you need to.

I never even got a steady 99% usage in JC2 at 1690 x 1050 even at 5GHz.

Low the res, the more cpu intensive a game gets. Often at lower res the cpu is the most important factor as you need so much horsepower just supply the gpu with enough info to do 60 fps min.

Edit: Low res means you need more cpu power than gpu, mid res you need equal power on both sides, high res you need huge gpu power but not cpu power.

Same map, there were like 28-30 people in the server. Same settings as OP. . On a Gigabyte P35 DS3R Mobo, so nothing special.

Edit: I should note that was looking at the ground and sky like he was. When I actually played, it was around 60-70fps. Granted, it was not as smooth as my Quad setup.

I'll still stick with my opinion that the i7 is a better cpu, the only thing the C2Q can even keep up with it on is a few games.
And when it comes to games there are plenty that have the C2D keeping up with the new cpu's clock for clock...

In the end there is much more to computers then just playing games. So choose hardware suited to your preferences...

As far as BC2, I cant see how his results are flawless, as I have upgraded from a 9550 @ 4.0 to a 760 @ 4.0 to my 950 @ 4.24, while there has been a difference in gameplay. mainly on min FPS, the difference has not been a "WOW" effect in this game, just a nice bit smoother....
