A Few Overclocking Questions--First Build

Thread Starter
First of all, thanks to the people who dedicated their time to help newbies like me. You guys must get these 'first build' threads quite a bit. I appreciate any feedback given.

So here we go:

Question 1. Which of these cards with be able to be overclocked the most?

ASUS GeForce GTX 570 1280MB
or
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 570 1280MB Overclocked

I've heard that the ASUS overclocks well, but the Gigabyte has 3 fans. Wouldn't that make it better?

Question 2. Will I be able to overclock the i5 2600k to 4Ghz on it's stock cooling, or will i have to buy one separately?

Question 3. Is 4GB RAM at 1600Mhz fast enough for overclocking? I've read that your RAM can 'fry', is this true?

Question 4. Will a 720W power supply provide sufficient power for a GTX 570 and an i5 2600k after overclocking?

Question 5. I'm getting a ASUS P8P67 Motherboard with B3 stepping, what is B3 stepping?

Click the hypertext for further details of the component.

Thanks for reading through the thread, that all the questions i can think of right now. Any feedback welcome.

Hi there ,

Q1:In general , ASUS cards are able to overclock more due to their BIOs revisions that allow for further overclocking with voltage mod.The main thing isn't about the fans but the temperatures.First rule of thumb is MORE COPPER = BETTER.CAN'T HAVE ENOUGH OF COPPER.

Q2:No personal experience , but from what i've read it hits 4Ghz easy but may be a little hot on the stock cooler.

Q3:I don't understand this , but yes , corsair RAMs are good for OC.Same can be said about frying your other components if you push it too much.

Q4:More than enough.

Q5:Just a revision thing , nothing noteworthy.

1. the Gigabyte will be better as its a non ref version. the ref version tend to burn its mosfets overclocking and overvolting
2. hmm. the stock cooler is quite meh. i would get a 212+ for overclocking still
3. yes. nope you will not fry it unless you are gonna pump 2v into it
4. it could but that psu is crap. a 650w would be more then sufficient. i do recommended the Antec TP-new 650/750w

5. the b3 stepping is to fix the pch issue on the sata 2 ports degrading.
hope it helps

Thanks for all the replies so far.
I've decided to go with the power supply Terence suggested, looks nice.
But I'm getting mixed messages whether to buy the ASUS or Gigabyte GTX 570. Any experts in this area or owners of 570's like to give their opinion?
