ASUS G73 series is probably your best bet. It's right in that price range and has excellent performance and good performance/dollar. There's a few versions of it, and I think all three of them have been reviewed by Anandtech, which I'd recommend checking on. What I don't know is if this line is scheduled to receive nextgen GPU refresh anytime soon, but even if it does, the current lineup is still quite a good machine.

Another thought is the Dell Studio XPS 15. Not a 'gaming' laptop exactly, but has some of the best built-in speakers around, one of the best laptop displays around, Sandy Bridge, and a Nvidia 540M (2GB) for $1050.
