$300 budget for CPU, motherboard, memory, gpu

Hello, I $300 for these components. I'm upgrading from an older c2d e6600 with an 8800gts 640. Can I make something better now with this budget? This is a secondary gaming rig for my nephew, mostly wow CSS and now rift. Resolution is 1680x1050. Thanks. I'm willing to go used if I need to.

AMD Athlon II X4 640 - $100
ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 - $100
GTS 250 1GB - $80 (Approximate)

You should be able to get 2GB of RAM for about $20 online or from a local shop, if you aren't overclocking it will be fine.

An AMD Athlon is still the best buy atm. Check for a used one on the forums.

For a graphics card, check the video sale forum. I'm sure you could get an HD5850 within your budget.

Did you just recommend your rig? (-: I actually mostly agree.

Id look at going with a board with 8+2 power over the 8+1. Maybe save a few bucks on the athlon x4 and go for the x3 and hope to get lucky and unlock. Going with this combo will allow for an upgrade a year-2 years down the road up to the big chips we see today for the same price point.

As for ram look for a 2x2gb kit of 1600 mhz. I'd normally say go with 2x4gb kit but to save money in this build heres a place to save ~$50 and later down the road you could stick a 2x4gb kit in and you'd be at 12gb and I'm sure that would be a lovely place to be.

As for gfx card id look for a 5000 series ATI, just my personal choice... vid cards are not my strongest suit... there are plenty of great options out there... I work on the belief of not spending more than $150 ever... and right now I am waiting for the 5770's to drop below $100 before I purchase. My mobo is running my 47" 1080p screen pretty well. I do have some dropped frames and games don't run amazing but its enough for me to wait it out.

What do you think about an athlon x3 435 that I could potentially unlock for a big oc, and a biostar a880g with 4gb of memory, for ~$190. That leaves me with ~$110 for a gpu, possibly a used gtx 460 or a 5870/6850/6870 I would have to shop around. The phenom x2 is tempting. I'm sure it would be faster than my c2d and 2extra cores woul be nice if I'm lucky. What is the percentage of unlocked core on that ~20%, maybe 30%? SMS seems to have lots of options to play with.

I am not sure of the % of unlocked cores, But my p2 x3 has not unlocked yet... doesn't mean it wont, but it hasn't done it easily. I am not too worried about it though, I prefer running at 3.6 stable on a stock 3.0 chip than working hard to get a 4th core that I am not too likely to need. Just my experience. BTW I am very happy with my 740 at the $68 i got it for on black friday.

Is there a Microcenter near you?
Don't unlock and go for a big OC on a Biostar 880G. VRMs are incapable.
I happen to have EXACTLY what you're looking for, if you don't mind buying used.

Link.

That's a solid 790FX board, a known good overclocking Athlon quad, 8GB of some of the best DDR2 out there, and I'll throw in the GT240 in my sig for ya.
