Update Below!

Greetings,

I have a peculiar problem which may be caused by my network. Now my setup may seem a bit complicated or convoluted but the building I am in necessitates it. My internet comes in on one side the building, this is where my modem/router combo is placed. A Zyxel P-2602HW-D1A from this the connection goes through ethernet cables to the room where I have all my PCs.
Here is where I have a linksys wrt54g2 router. Which connects my PCs.
Both devices have nat enabled, but work with different IP ranges. They do not overlap.

Now I'll reiterate what I said in the title, everything works perfectly. With a little port forwarding I can download and seed torrents correctly. Play online games, e-mail and use most IM programs flawlessly. My download speeds and ping have not taken any hits. Been quite proud of it actually since everyone is always harping on how awful such a setup is.

There is but one program which seems to fail, sometimes. Sometimes it works fine for days, and sometimes it's utterly dreadful for a day or two. This without me changing anything in my network. Windows Live Messenger.
It's been ticking my friends off since sometimes I simply can't be reached as messages fail to be delivered.
At first I thought switching to a different client like digsby might work. It didn't. Even if I'm on e-buddy.com the problem persists. However Skype works just fine. So does steam.

I have a friend who has some IT education who keeps blaming my network. However my line of thinking is that if there was a structural problem in my network, A: Windows live messenger would be affected all the time, not just on some days. B: More programs would show problems than just WLM.

Any insights? I'd like to solve this without spending any money (getting wireless cards for my PCs, or any new stuff)

EDIT: Even if I'm directly connected to my modem the problem persists, this is not a double NAT issue. The topic has been rendered moot and can be deleted.

remove the problem, aka the double nat...

double nat is always a problem, you can work around it, but there are somethings that just won't work well or at all...

bridge the modem and wire your equipment correctly instead of for convenience...
