i7 920 thermal degrade?

Thread Starter
hi folks, had my i7 920 for 6/9 months now, up until month or two it has been fine, but past few weeks ive been folding with temps on the cpu 80-85C, and all of sudden its gone fom needing 1.28v to 1.34v...:S

Is it possible for degradtion this quick?

Anything I can do to reduce need for volt?
80-85C shouldn't cause degradation that quickly.

Try lowering the clock speed

Have you been moving your computer around recently? If so, try tightening/remounting your cooler.

I havent moved the pc for while, I used to have a fan blowing air into side of pc, I used to be able to do 1.28v, but then went up to 1.30v for few months, the fan kept temps under 80, but then i tried going for higher memory speds but still keeping 4ghz, so i went wit 19 multiplier, that needed 1.32v...and now i get BSOD quite often while folding so i bumped up to like 1.34v

I'm curious to know if you've had those low voltages the whole time when folding or if it was just during some stress testing with LinX and Prime95.

Reason being that real world stress testing comes from your own daily software usage...and not just test programs like LinX and Prime95. Your CPU was probably unstable to begin with so needing that extra voltage is what you probably needed to stabilize. Degradation should happen at higher temperatures and overclocks/voltages (like me...4.40Ghz 1.47v which I have yet to experience ).

Well, I'm no expert but from the looks of it, the heat is causing the instability. If I understand correctly, did you remove the fan from the side panel to cool your overclocked ram?

Edit: Just saw you have the Haf 932, with the 230mm fan right? Did you remove it?

yeh i took the side fan off and was using standard room fan cos i had 2 gpus and they were too hot.

I had my cpu at 1.28v for months, then had to go to 1.30v, then i went for higher memory clocks and had 1.32v on cpu, and now I need 1.34v

Do you still have the ram overclocked? And also, did you up the voltage on the ram? I have seen people experience similar issues once upping the voltage on ram. Also, its starting to get warmer in England, so ambient temps would be higher. Your first post says 6/9 months; sorry but I do not understand correctly.

Also, it is possible that the original side panel offered better CPU cooling while your room fan offers better GPU cooling.

ram is at just under 1600mhz, 7-7-7-20 stock clocks. All voltages set to auto apart from cpu volt, i tried doing manual volt settings but they didnt work
