Core i5-750 High Voltage for Frequency?

Thread Starter
For a while now, I've been running my Core i5 750 at 3.6Ghz with 1.3V.

CPU-z Validation HERE If needed

According to Prime95, its stable at 1.3V but anything lower and its not fully stable. Also if I raise is up to 3.8Ghz, it gives me a BSOD right after boot up in windows, and at 3.7Ghz, P95 fails after 5 minutes.

I've tried disabling Intel Speed Step and it didn't improve stability at all.

I have:

Intel C-Start Tech + [Disabled]
Intel Speed Step [Enabled]
Xtreme Phase Full Power Mode [Enabled]
Load Line Calibration [Disabled]
CPU Spread Spectrum [Disabled]
PCIE Spread Spectrum [Disabled]
C1E Support [Enabled]

Temps go up to 60C on load with p95 so temps shouldn't be a problem

The problem is, why do I need as much as 1.3V to run just 3.6Ghz? Is there a way to lower the voltage and keep stability, or to raise the frequency without loss of stability? Did I do something wrong?

Thanks!

You should be able to hit 4.0ghz fairly easily with the 750.

Turn all power saving features off, speed step, CIE. Not sure what PCIE spread or CPU spread is? Turn off turbo mode. Set BLCK to 180, multi to 20 for 3.8ghz. VTT to 1.22 or 1.24, try with vcore at 1.30v, LLC enabled to level 2. (Set BLCK to 200 for 4ghz) All other features leave on AUTO.

Ram multi to x8 and manually enter timings and DRAM voltage (specified voltage).

Check for stability with p95 doing Small FFT's for half an hour. Then do a blend test for another hour.

Report back and see how u go.

I did exactly as you said, except for LLC when I set it to just [Enabled] since my motherboard doesn't have LLC Levels.

This time it booted up like before, but after the desktop and all the icons appeared, it froze, only the curser worked.

You will probably need to give us a screenshot or description of the voltages you are using, don't forget that not all chips are created equal and overclocking and tweaking takes time and patience, it maybe a memory problem or not enough vcore? Have you run everything at default and tested stability? What are your temps?

Temps on load with P95 are 58-60C while with Rybka Aquarium, around 55C.

I'll take some pictures of the Bios tomorrow

Thanks for the help so far

Turning off power saving features had no significant effect on stability last time, so I turned them back on.

I hope that we're both doing something wrong and that theres something that we missed :/

BTW, for Intel core i5s, if u stay under 80C it should be fine so don't worry about a temp of 73C

Edit: and those temperatures with such a cooler probably means that your cooler isn't properly mounted!

I dont know how could I mount it wrong ...theres only 2screws to tighten and a pea size of thermal compound to put in the middle (besides I did it 2 or 3times ...temps were always the same) ...unless i mount it vertically havent tryed that yet

I do have high ambient temperatures though 28-30°c
