What budget rigs to build?

(Tried to find more appropriate section, failed, if the thread is not for here, move it to the off-topic, or wherever is best wink.gif )

My mother-in-law's PC died. My brother's PC is outdated.
As you may guess, my mother-in-law doesn't find herself playing Crysis very often, as my bro does, so its ok for her to have an outdated rig.
I have my sig rig and an extra GPU HD3450, and my brother's rig is:

Opteron 1212 SantaAna (2.2, OCd to 2.7)
A nice Thermaltake cooler
2GB DDR2
Nv GTS240.

Now, my aim is to build rigs for my bro and my wife's mom
and to pay as little as possible for new parts.
Which will be the best way to combine those components?

One variant is to give my entire rig to my bro, then give his entire rig to my mother in law. But that way I still have an extra 3450, which I can't use, and my bro will most probably not want to give his brand new 240 to my wife's mom (she won't use it anyway).

Another option is to give my mobo and CPU to my brother, he keeps his GPU, I keep mine, I give his mobo and CPU to my m-i-l with the HD3450.

Another option is to give my mobo and CPU to my wife's family with the HD3450, because it can CF with my mobo's IGP, and then get a new mobo and CPU for my bro.

In all cases I'll have to buy a new rig for myself (probably PhII x3 + 5870 or similar), but I want both the other rigs to be as fast as possible and everything to cost as little as possible.

Am I missing some other alternative?

Sorry for the long description wink.gif Thanks

Your cpu, motherboard, and ram to your brother and you get new cpu, motherboard, and ram and keep the 4870 for the time being. Bros cpu, motherboard, and ram to your mother in law. What motherboard does your brother have? Does it have onboard video? 3450 -> mother in law too if not.

OR

Give just the cpu to your brother, as the Athlon II with the 240 will be a decent gaming rig and (dependent on his motherboard) can take the Atlon II with a bios flash and buy yourself a new AM3 cpu.

Aren't too many Phenom II X3s on sale but the Phenom II X4 820 is on sale at newegg for 85 currently. 4mb of L3 cache and C2 revision. OEM so need a heatsink.

Get a cheap board that will take the opteron and has onboard or use the 3450 again. The problem here is the ddr2 ram, ddr2 is often more expensive now than ddr3, and ddr3 prices have come way down. I'd go with option A for this exact reason, and buy yourself a low latency kit (there are some 1600 7-8-7 on sale for 50 recently) with a new ddr3 board.

Yes, I think I'll go with option A, because even with the Ath 260, my bro would still have 2Gb DDR2, which fails on heavy gaming. And I don't want to buy any other DDR2 for the same reason you pointed smile.gif
So A seems to be the best option. THe only downside is that the 3450 won't CF with my bro's IGP (GF 8200, mobo is Asus M3Nsomething).. But nah, its not a big deal wink.gif THanks!
