screen freezing/complete shutdown

Thread Starter
I have begun to have problems with complete freeze up when playing BFBC2. I have been midly overclocking but I returned the card and CPU to stock and it still happens. It seems to happen after about the same amount of time in game. It even froze when I left the game one after dieing and left for a few minutes. I use Trixx for overclocking my 5850 and it shows temps only around 50c. I was using AMD Overdrive to monitor the CPU, it showed temps of about 53c. I blew out AMD Od and installed Coretemp. It also showed 53c but disappeared after a crash. I put in Speeedfan and it show the following: Temp 1 @ 36c, I think this is the card as it matches Trixx, it has a blue arrow pointing down, Temp 2 @ 40c, a green check mark, Temp 3 @ 80c, it has a flame, Core @ 41c with a green check mark. Can anyone tell me what the temp 3 means and is the flame my problem?

flame symbol means its over the preset temp. green check means its steady at that temp and under the preset. the arrow of course means its down from what it was just before.
are you sure your waterblock is seated ? are you sure you dont have an air bubble ?
how long have you had the loop going ? sure the pumps still running 100% all the time ?

You have a small big problem over there , a CRAP PSU !

So a system shuts down (or it should) when:
-the CPU reaches a temperature limit ,usually 65 Celsius should shut the mobo down.
-a VRM has a problem ,overcurrent ,short or overheating
-the power supply turns off due to over current protection kicking in ,in case it has it.

I recommend you test with a different power supply from a friend as the power supply looks suspicious.

My 790XT-G45 died after a BF BC2 session ,some BSOD-s and then unrecoverable black screens ,this game is a killer

I have been playing on the rig for at least 4 months. Just a sudden change. By water block you would mean the unit that sets on the CPU. How do you check for an air bubble? How do I check the pumps.

Funny, I was thinking power supply for some reason. It is not within my experience but it seemed like a culprit. Should be easy to test at least.

You may want to use HWmonitor to check temps. Also, Bad Company 2 has a common problem of locking up and crashing the system, which is caused by Punkbuster and not AMD/ATI drivers, before anybody says that.

Do you crash like this is any other games, or in CoD4 or 5, if you play them? Because they also suffer from this. Don't know why games still use Punkbuster anyway, it sucks and Even Balance refuse to fix the problems.

BF BC2 may be badly coded or PB itself ,but i m telling you ,this game is the best benchmark you could get.
If a rig runs this game 6 hours falwlessly then you have a rock solid PC.
This game will make any flaw in the system to show up it s ugly face.

The power supply is ,at least for me ,the culprit here.It s the weak link in this system.
Even if the mobo may be already done ,the thing that killed it is not the game but the PSU.Abnormal ripple ,overshots and noise kills hardware.

P.S. I haven't had any issues whatsoever (latest PunkBuster update included).
It could be, but a Punk Buster error DOESN T SHUT DOWN a PC!

I tried to changed drivers, tried to roll back to 10.11. Cannot get in to safe mode from bios screen, only when it crashes and goes to startup again. Also had an error with Driver Sweeper in downloading. I have not played anything else lately, I have LFD2 and Counter Strike amongst others to try but I am in a group that has its own server so it stick to BF right now. Someone in my game suggested punkbuster, what is the solution for that?
