Server issue, very strange.

Thread Starter
Now we just redid our server.

specs:
2x E5520 cpus
12 gigs of gskill ram
its a super micro barebone box.

Now the issue is that we had to get a new mobo due to the fact that our old mobo had a couple dead DIMM slots and it was only reading 8 gigs.

so we got a new board and we set it up added win server 2008 datacenter and the bios was showing 12 gigs.

now the is issue we are getting now when we plug in a monitor it shows 12 gigs.(this is at the datacenter)

When we remove the VGA it shows 10 gigs.

Could this be a bios issue ? Possibly an update could fix this or?

For clarification: are you reading the BIOS in both instances (with and without the VGA) or in two different places with and without? So you look at the memory amount in windows with a VGA hooked up and it says "12 gigs" and as soon as you disconnect the VGA the number drops to 8? Probably not, just trying to get the full picture here.

Once my tech goes out there next week, I guess doing the bios update would be the 1st step. but the tech didnt have time to get that done since he was in a hurry.

Is the GSkill RAM on the HCL? I would doubt it (GSkill ain't usually on the test lists), and could well be your issue.

I wouldn't even consider resistors wedged in the VGA port as an option in a DC.

I would let my tech leave a colo until it was running properly - he would have been better off removing it & taking it somewhere it could be fixed rather than doing a half-arsed job with it... (but that's just my opinion )

Sounds like the system has some trouble with allocating video RAM. BIOS update would be something to try indeed.
