I'm putting together a new gaming rig. My first build, and I figure that a good rig needs an equal environment. I have a great space in my living room and while I could make do in there with a lesser desk, I'd rather have something ideal. I've been doing some looking and planning while waiting for all the computer components to arrive - everything I've found that close to what I want is well over $500. That lead me to thinking of building something myself, which probably won't be too much cheaper but should give me what I want.

The rig is in a Cooler Master HAF X, so the case is big and quite heavy. The set up will eventually have two 23" monitors as well. I'm planning on running an HDMI to the home entertainment system as well as a digital audio.

A quick description of the space - the living room is L shaped, and on the inside of the upper portion of the L is an alcove. Its about 70" wide by 40" deep. I'm not worried the desk being contained entirely in that space. I am also not looking to use it for storage - I have plenty of that around the house.

After spending some time looking at do-it-yourself projects online, pre-built desks that are available, and Home Depot, I think I have a plan. The idea to make an L-shaped desk by using two matched desks, with one slightly taller so the other can slide a bit beneath it. Building it as two makes it far easier to move and such.

The desks are going to be made out 48" x 24" x 3/4" melamine with routered edges, and a subframe of similar thickness melamine for strength. I have found adjustable black steel legs of the right length. The side desk will have the CP on it. I am planning to have a dropdown box built in underneath for a printer and some external hard drives. If possible, I'd like to mount the APC surge protector on the side of this, with a hole or slot in the top for cable management. The front desk will have a platform for the monitors.

As I'm still in the planning and design process, I'm trying to find some ideas to incorporate. Stuff to make the desk even more useful, modular, or even just cool. That's the intent of this post. I've spent a bunch of time looking at designs online, specifically custom-built desks. Most of what I have found that qualify as neat little additions aren't needed. Stuff like hidden drawers (not looking for storage), integrated lighting (the alcove has), or built in device chargers (don't need). So I am asking you folks for ideas on possible additions to the project.

Any help is appreciated.
