Want to extend 5850 longevity. Overclock it?

Thread Starter
I loaded up Dragon Age 2 for the first time and was a bit concerned that I was getting around 30 fps at very high settings. With the high resolution textures activated and at absolute max settings I get around 20 fps! I run my 5850 at stock settings.

What should I do to get more out of my 5850 at this point? Should I get an after market cooler and crank it to 900mhz? Would that make a big difference with FPS in games like Dragon Age 2?

How will I ever be ready for Battlefield 3?

Noone knows if your ready for BF3, but i can assure you that you can "play it" at decent settings.

30FPS in dragon age 2 is the best your gonna get, try OCing the GPU.

You could buy another and run it in CF mode. Prices are under $190 for a 5850. Rebates are available too.

OCing it will give you better results, maybe up to 10 fps? You can also OC your CPU as well. Or throw in another 5850? BF3 will be more demanding than Dragon Age II, or you can safely assume it will demand at least the same as Dragon Age II.

Okay then, sounds like an aftermarket cooler and a fat overclock will be my best option.

I forgot to consider crossfire, however isnt it a ***** dealing with alot of the issues a crossfire set up can present? Still, crossfire is definitely still an option as well.

Thanks guys!

Crank it up a bit and check your FPS.
I get about the same in DA demo, buggy as hell if you ask me.

You'll have no problem running BF3, in BC2 I max everything and leave AA/AF at 1x and I get 60+ FPS consistently in a 32 man server. [1920x1080 res]
When I turn HBAO off I get 90-130+
After having AA/AF at 32x-16x and dropping it to 1x I hardly notice a difference.

Just an FYI for you, the minimum requirement for DA 2 is HD 5850.

The very high settings are meh on Dragon Age 2. It doesnt look well optimized. If you turn off AA and AF it might get you smoother fps. Though I just run it on high with aa and af maxed, and I like it much more, who cares about that minor tessalation and dof, its not worth it.

DA 2 = poorly coded console port

OCing helps, you can get around a 10-20 FPS gain depending on the game.

I don't understand what's this fuss about Battlefield 3, it looks just a tad bit better than Bad Company 2 which runs flawless.
Basically, you can't go form "not enough fps" to "enough fps" by just OC'ing something. OC is just a sweet extra.
