ATT in the United States vs Hong Kong overseas

Thread Starter
My apologies if this is the wrong section to have this, it's a combination of 2 news threads with their sources to get opinions on what people think of how our country is headed backwards in the internet technology.

This is happening in the United States:
AT&T will cap DSL and U-Verse internet, impose overage fees
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/13/a...-overage-fees/
Quote:
Ladies and gentlemen, the days of unlimited broadband may be numbered in the United States, and we're not talking wireless this time -- AT&T says it will implement a 150GB monthly cap on landline DSL customers and a 250GB cap on subscribers to U-Verse high speed internet starting on May 2nd. AT&T will also charge overage fees of $10 for every additional 50GB of data, with two grace periods to start out -- in other words, the third month you go over the cap is when you'll get charged. DSLReports says it has confirmation from AT&T that these rates are legitimate, and that letters will go out to customers starting March 18th.

This is happening in Hong Kong:
Cheap, Ultrafast Broadband? Hong Kong Has It
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/06/bu...digi.html?_r=1
Quote:
HONG KONG residents can enjoy astoundingly fast broadband at an astoundingly low price. It became available last year, when a scrappy company called Hong Kong Broadband Network introduced a new option for its fiber-to-the-home service: a speed of 1,000 megabits a second — known as a “gig†— for less than $26 a month.

I can't believe that our country is regressing in the #1 technology people use today while other "smarter, not greed filled or think only about the money not the people" countries are giving people MORE for LESS on a VIRTUAL service that NEVER runs out... ATT you sadden me and this is going to put more people into debt and **** up their credit. Cause you know damn well they aren't paying that $400 internet bill when they go over that 150GB/month limit.

TL;DR It sucks to be a US citizen relative to a Honk Kong one as far as broadband is concerned.

Honestly? I love AT&T, they don't let me down, this isn't a let down for me.... most of us will never reach that cap. (minus 2% of us)
Good luck getting infrastructure like Hong Kong's into a country that's 3,000 miles wide without ton of manpower and money.

But these caps are just ludicrous. Instead of using their profits to improve local network infrastructure, they cap people to cope. What utter garbage.

In other words; We don't have service and prices like Hong Kong because American ISPs are too greedy to risk a hit in profit while they develop a fancy new infrastructure.

What a bunch of greedy punks.

Isn't 150Gb quite a bit? I download more than most and surf probably 4hrs/day avg, I doubt I go over 150Gb. And to have $400 charge in overages, you'd have to go over 150Gb not once, not twice, but three times over month long periods. Not only that but you'd have to download more than 50*(400/10) = 2000Gb + your original 150Gb. I am not sure even if you saturate a DSL connection for 30 days if it's possible to do this. Anyone care to comment?

EDIT: please don't read this as advocating AT&T's policy in the US, which sucks. Comparisons to AT&T's Hong Kong policy doesn't help much though since they're apples and oranges. I suspect that their Hong Kong policy is the result of competition in the marketplace though. If Verizon offered that kind of deal here in the US, I'm sure AT&T would revise its strategy. These telecoms giants are going to be as greedy as they can, and I doubt it's Hong Kong division would be any less greedy than it's US division if they thought they could get away with it.

I am SO tired of hearing our nation's size as to the reason why we "Americans" have apathetically stood by and allow these fat cats to get by with "oh its good enough"..Its a good thing we didn't have that attitude, good luck trying to defeat the undefeated, during the revolution otherwise we would be part of Brittan right now(No offense UK).

Regardless of it being a government agency or not I hope the FCC ******* hammers the 100mbps requirement within 10 years right into the hearts of these jokers while I listen to the *****ing and crying much like that of a 6 year old from the telecom companies..

This is not a fair comparison.

HK has 7M people and a landmass of 1104sq km. This equates to approx to 1.577e-4 sq km per person.

US has 308M people and a landmass of 9.83M sq km. This equates to approx 0.0318 sq km per person.

This is over 200 times larger. The material costs alone of this network warrant much higher prices. Factor in that everybody over here lives in massive apartment blocks means it even cheaper than bringing it to individual homes.

All this is the same reason, Mobile networks in HK are some of the cheapest in the world too.

However for all of these reasons, HK is an awesome place. Max 15% Income tax, No Inheritance tax or Capital Gains and the GOvernment just announced they would give 1000USD cash to everyone over 18 and 1000USD off their tax bill.

This is all going on Bulldozer
