1090T High CPU temps w/ Frio

Thread Starter
Alright guys, here is my Rig:
Corsair 600t
Phenom X6 1090t @ 1.34v (20x18.5 3.7ghz)
Thermaltake Frio push/pull @ 1700rpms (MX-3 Applied)
Asus Crosshair IV Formula
2400mhz NB @ 1.22v
2x2 Muskin Blackline @ 1.65v (1600mhz 7-9-7-24-1t)
Sapphire Radeon 6870 reference design @ stock clocks
Corsair AX850 PSU
WD Caviar Black SATA III 1tb HDD

I thought my temps were better until I realized from reading up that the core temps on the thuban's is way off from actual socket temp. Using PCprobeII my Crosshair Formula is reading up to 62*C on 20min prime runs. Now I know this is still ok and the "max temp" this chip should be run at. That being said, I would really like to keep this under 55*C... especially since the 3.7ghz is just temporary and I have had the rig running stable at 4.0ghz, 18.5 multi is the highest that the factory CnQ will operate. Room temp is approx 73*F. Doesn't this seem high? I am coming from a X4 955 and I realize powering 2 more cores is going to add extra heat but with the frio on there I didn't anticipate this. Now I can crank the Frio fans up higher and the temps will drop several degrees, but the fans get stupid loud and IMO are not livable past the RPM I have them on.

Yeah, that's too high. What thermal paste are you using, and how did you apply it? Sounds like you really need to reseat the Frio and reapply your thermal paste.

Used mx-3 with dot method.Thought about pulling it off I just don't know what could have gone wrong applying it.

Might have used too much. Remount it using less TIM.

You should list your rig specs in your signature so we all have an idea of your complete system, it helps.

I'd ask what case you're running in (opps now I see it) and question the number of fans and how good is the air flow through the case? Also when OC'ing you may need to replace the stock cooler fans if they get too noisy and get that air moving better.

Look at a pair of Scythe GT AP-15's as for a push pull setup http://www.dangerden.com/store/gentl...rpm-ap-15.html they can't be beat for performance to noise ratio. They can be hard to find in stock at present time but worth the trouble and the price if noise is an issue. It's all in the static pressure.

For even better noise and temp control look into a Rasa 750 RS360 kit http://www.overclock.net/water-cooli...-rs-rx120.html and put that issue to bed for good.

And yes those temps are high for that OC, I get an average of 48-50c with the Rasa kit during a 24 hr run of prime95, and when I had a Scythe Mugen running a 4013MHz OC that hit 54-55c max with 24 hrs of prime95.

Try the microlyzed diamond stuff. I am not using a Frio, but really only a pea-sized dollop in the center should do. Did that and got 4.2 Ghz on my wife's 970 with that paste. The Frio is supposed to be a good fan so it might need to be reseated like the other said. You shouldn't get load temps over 55 degrees on the Phenom II. The Thurban and the Deneb have similar temps I believe.

You might just have a bad mount (poor/uneven contact between the heatsink base and the CPU heatspreader). MX-3 and the stock Frio fans should be more than sufficient for a X6.. certainly works well enough for i7s.

Well, took the frio off and redid the paste... I did have more on there than I needed, which I was excited about, figured that was my issue. Reapplied paste and I will say my temps did drop, they are about 59c now. Still seems high, but this temp I only get on Prime running large fft's.

Ok, after reseating I am getting about 62cpu socket temp with a 4.0ghz oc @ 1.4v after 20 min prime runs. Does this sound acceptable considering I am running the fans below half speed? I feel like some of this is from the cpu temp sensor heat soaking.
Not in my book, still too hot. 62c is the max temp AMD recommends before chip degradation, and to keep a stable system you should NOT exceed 55c.

Your hitting 62c after just 20 minutes of prime95? FYI prime will produce max heat at the 15-20 minute level and than another time after 1 hour on my rig. Bare in mind to be considered stable you need to pass 12-24 hrs of prime95.

Your still not there temp wise. If turning the fans up is that big of an issue you should seriously consider going with water cooling before you ruin that cpu.

Sorry if this isn't what you want to hear, but it seems to me your asking too much from to little. No way would I run my chip with that temp.
