I'm not entirely convinced that any person just one day decides to become a ethical hacker. I believe most successful hackers literally grew into it over years of experience and knowledge by spending literally hundreds of hours on learning the basics. I am not a hacker myself but I do not think it is a easy occupation or as simple as taking a course in it and/or learning a programming language. Of course I may be completely wrong. That aside C is a very good foundation for programming in my experience. To understand how software works on low level, though, knowledge of assembly will be required.

I started in C++ and then learned Java, but I need to brush up on my programming knowledge. Once you know one, the rest are easy.

If you have no programming experience, python will give you a good foundation to build upon. If you have some experience already, C is most definitely the rout to go for what(I think?) it is that you want to do, and depending on who you talk to LISP will expand your mind. Buffing up on networking protocols and bash/c shell scripting as far as finding insecurities, but really those kinds of things start from "Do you guys password protect your computers? Your network? Do you have a password policy? Is it any good?", because it sounds like your more in line for consultation.

just take the "easy" route
and learn BackTrack or something similar
it pretty much has all the tools to "hack" or do your system penetration testings
im pretty sure you'll be learning a programming language for years before you start doing some "1337 $kill$ hacks" unless you are a genius

*edit* even though the softwares are there and made easy for you, you can try to do it without them and try to understand how they function instead of clicking the button "hack him"
this is the recommended route and as close to "programming" as you can get

I took a course for CEH one time. It is so convoluted. There is barely any programing involved in that. Most of the course was teaching us how to use nmap, cain and abel and back orifice. After the entire course i felt more like a script kiddie than a hacker. Unfortunately that test is way expensive to take. At least i got my CCNA free for tacking the course. That test was a little more reasonable. But GL on the CEH. It is a mind storm of ideas.
