3rd card?

Thread Starter
Hey guys...

As seen in my specs I have 5870 crossfire 1GB, 3.8ghz cpu.

My vantage score is 29,000. Not sure how good or bad this is. The cards are stock due to heat.

Just wondering how much performance I would see in games like bad company 2, bf3 etc if I bought a decent nvidia card, plugged it into the 3rd slot and used it for physx. The 3rd slot isn't x16 on my board I think...

Thanks

Hello Big,

Your specs are excellent, and your vantage score is very good as well. I would expect to see much better performance with the 3rd card for the physics but make sure to type in the configuration code in the "control panel" folder under "My Computer." It should be a simple MySQL edit. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Jeffrey

IIRC, BC2 does not support Physx. And I do not know about BF3.

A dedicated Physx card is responsible to do Physx calculation. If your primary card is Nvidia, then it can do Physx calculation in the absence of a Physx card. And because of the double duties, the framerate will be lower. If a Physx card is present, it takes away the Physx calculation and so the overall framerate will be higher, in addition to seeing the eye candies.

However, as your primary cards are AMD which cannot do Physx calculation, adding a Physx card will not give you better performance (ie higher framerate) but it will give you the Physx effects (eg eye candies like smoke, explosion, clothes...etc).

There are different kinds of Physx, however. Like in Mafia II, in the absence of a Physx card and if you enable Physx, some Physx effects will be done by your CPU, resulting with a possible lower performance.
Look at these 2 graphs done by Tom's:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...on,2764-8.html

Graph 1 shows that a HD5870 with the Physx effects done by the CPU (a Phenom II X6) has horrible fps while having a Dedicated Physx card helps tremendously.

Graph 2 shows that a Physx card can perform well even at x4 speed.
(Your Asus P6T's 3rd PCIEx16 slot (white slot) runs at this speed)

Unless if the games you play specifically have PhysX enabled aspects in the game, there is very little to gain performance wise from it.

With that said, however, games like Mirror's Edge and especially Batman: Arkham Asylum have a different feel to them when playing with PhysX enabled. The effects add up to help immerse you into their worlds. To a certain extent, Mafia 2 can possibly give you that feeling as well, but suffice it to say, they're certainly not game breaking content if you did not see these subtle effects.

See if any of the games you enjoy playing are listed and watch some comparison videos on YouTube or similar to determine whether if it is worth it for you or not:

Thanks guys!

So last question, is 29k in vantage (not the new patched one) good for my system or should it be higher? The video cards are stock, CPU is at 3.8.

Assuming your using a high preset - 29k is pretty good - guru3d got 23k with theirs

- there are driver hacks to run a physx card on an AMD system, don't know if you would want to go through all the hassles to run it, and just remember, adding another hot card would just aid in heating your case up even more.

This is an excellent score!! In fact, I wonder if it might be too good to be true? Perhaps it has something to do with yours not being the 'new patched one'?

The pic below shows 3DMark Vantage Performance World ranking from 162 to 173 for HD5870 crossfired. People having two overclocked HD5870s and overclocked i7 achieve 28k score. For example, the guy in the red rectangle even used the same motherboard as yours and he got 28710.

A dedicated PhysX card will help your bench scores but not the games you are playing (BC2) or will play (BF3). period.

Hmm... weird. Well I'll patch it later and run the test again. I doubt I should be beating that guy when he's got the same CPU as me (But mine's 3.8, his is 4.2) and motherboard. Also my cards are stock and my RAM is even underclocked a tad.

I want to go to 4.0 just haven't had the time to put it there lately.

EDIT: Only thing I can think is drivers. Was that score done with old drivers? I'm running the 11.4 preview drivers.

My screen flickers black a bit in BC2. It doesn't artifact or anything just flickers on and off or part of the screen will do it. It goes away and is kind of rare. Any ideas?
