Maybe you should ask "Why isn't my hardware free"?
Winrar doesn't need to be paid for if you don't mind clicking on a button every time it asks. I don't unrar enough for this nagging to drive me to 7zip so I just install a trial and never activate it.

WinRAR is great but I prefer real freeware anyway (7-zip)

I've been using Winrar 3.something beta for awhile. It's free and works fine. No need to pay for it unless you want all the cool stuff.

I just use it to extract.

eh
never tried winrar
might download it and try it out
7-zip has been good to me for years tho.

It's infinite freeware mate, though you don't get all the features as you do when you buy the program, it's a very nice program for sure...

I'm actually considering buying 4.0...

I love WinRAR!
Nagware still isn't freeware.

It may be fine for one or two files, but when you mod games like I do and end up opening 50-60 zip, rar and 7z files in one session...yeah, it gets real annoying real fast and 7zip looks far better.

lol some of you guys are funny. '$30 is too much for winrar.' Really? for a lifetime of use and free updates $30 is cheap. That's half of a game these days, unless the game is homefront *bada bing!*

Winrar has served me well since .rar hit it big, I wont buy it, but I'll certainly recommend it. Tried 7zip too, and it's pretty good as well, so no one should complain about the price of it :/

Coming from the guy with a e6750. (Not that my specs are any good)

I'll never pay for any software, operating systems or anything. Everything should be open source, and if it's not... Well if I want it I'll still have it.

What do the winrar people think I am rich or something?

This is going to go back and forth forever.

It's going to go on about standards of living, you having a modern pc and internet and all that jazz.

Hell i think everything should be free even hardware at some point when we get to the kind of technology that will make it possible if the powers that be allow it.

Problem being were not at that point. I guess all software developers should go into making drivers? Software has been a bit stagnant for a while in terms of anything new and exciting this is probably why no one wants to pay for it. Even the open source developers gotta make there meat and potatoes somewhere.

It can certainly add up but it's not like your buying adobe photoshop or microsoft office where it's hundreds of dollars your buying a one time $30 dollars. If you can't actually afford that you would have a real problem.

No need to make up reasons.... just YARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHH.
