It's not a similar position. He's just saying that he thinks HTML5 will eventually take over, and that's probably true. Mozilla isn't completely disabling Flash or breaking apps/webpages that are using it. Until that happens, I won't bash or stop using my favorite browser.

How do you think all this stuff is being implemented? There are only 3 ways to provide a client with rich data. That's Flash, javascript, and java applets. No one really uses applets anymore. So your left with 2 ways. Javascript and Flash.

Sure doing complex animations is 1200 times harder in javascript then in in flash. That's why Adobe said it would provide tools for doing this like they do with flash.

Ugh.

Using jQuery is like cutting and pasting an image of the Mona Lisa into paint. The end result looks nice, but you didn't do any work.

But as commonly know, on OCN many people will read the title and not even glance at the article itself.

Edit: For those too lazy to read the article he says that HTML 5 is the way to go and that Flash causes issues. That's about it. Basically it is just a plug for HTML 5 support.
Which is why I didn't comment on the article? I'm sorry the title of the article poorly represents what the article is truly about.

Based on your explanation of the article, it sounds like they're not dropping flash support, but they're not going to utilize/keep it in mind with upcoming builds. Regardless of how flash relates to Firefox, that's how you explained it, which seems off.

Its not so much defending flash as it is defending an unfortunately very important feature. If flash wasn't so important on todays web, it wouldn't have been a big issue.

The difference here is that these browsers will continue supporting flash for a long time even after HTML5 becomes dominant, where the the iDevice situation you had no choice.

If its not backward compatible, I don't want it...
Version 4 is a few days away? And Flash is working on it perfectly fine.

The guy is saying "Flash is going to die soon enough." not "We're saying no to flash at all and trying to force this thing like Apple."

I could code HTML stuff when I was 8, just sayin'

And who knows if someone won't make a Flash like editor for HTML5 canvas stuff? Dreamweaver does for the rest of HTML already just about...I think, anyway, I use Notepad++.

And? If it works, it works even if it was all done for you.

Shockwave is flash IIRC....

Windows Media Player is great, i use it for all video, and a modified version (Zune) for audio

Quicktime is still used quite a bit

Real never really caught on.

Really sir. Your comparing simple slides, explodes, and fades to motion tweening? There will eventually need to be good graphical tools for doing this. Besides as much as I love jQuery(my favorite JSF library, primefaces is built on it), $fx and jsAnim are much better for animations. Fades and slides are good for most people though.

It's not for Adobe to decide when Flash gets killed off. That's down to web designers, browsers and W3C. W3C need to ratify and finalise the spec, browsers need to start to support that spec (which they are) and then finally people need to start coding in HTML5. I'm preaching to the congregation here, I know.
I wasn't trying to jumble your words...my point was that Apple's stated objective is to get people to start working more in HTML5, right? Whether specific user groups agree or disagree that HTML5 is ready for prime time, Apple's argument is that it *is* ready.

So again..."too early" is in the eye of the beholder, or the stakeholder, or whatever. I mean, there are still constituencies that might argue that it's too early to kill off IE6 because they "need" it for something. Crazy, right? Apple is just on the other end of the timeline spectrum here, pushing the HTML5 agenda before most people are quite ready to move. Someone has to go first, and they have to be willing to take the heat for it...I think they're okay in that role.

There has to be something bigger pushing for these changes...

Maybe the MIAA or Music Protect people???

I think they want to control content on the web, we may be moving towards a less functional browser where Browsers will not work with 3rd party tools, etc...

I smell a rat...
