550 BE Won't go over 3.32GHZ?

Thread Starter
I need abit of help here guys, i can't seem to get my B50 (550 x2 BE) to go above 3.38GHZ and everytime the NB goes over 2100mhz it won't post. (16.5 x 205 = 3382MHZ)

I've had the b50 up to 3.8GHZ @ 1.4v (1.35v standard)and the NB at 2100HMZ @ 1.2V (1.1v standard) but the workers on #2 #3 #4 all fail with an error in PRIME95 after 3 or 4 minutes. At the current clock (3.38GHZ) it has ran PRIME95 for 24 hours and zero faults.

Whats a safe voltage for the 550's? I'm scared of putting it past 1.4v and with the NB heatsink on my Gigabyte board being so lose i'm worried about NB temps if I push it to my desired 2400mhz.

Even if I have it in X2 mode it wont clock past 3.5ghz stable :/ I was hoping to see 4.0ghz from this

Any hint's or tips? I'm pretty new to AMD overclocking.

(PC Spec is in my sig for referance)

The top out voltage for AMD cpu's is 1.55v.

but if the core's are failing then the one one or two cored locked where dodgy to begin with.

What do you mean by "the NB heatsink on my Gigabyte board being so lose"? If the heatsink is not in proper contact with the NB chip then of course you are going to fail, and eventually burn out your board. Also, what are you temps for idle and load?

My x555 is at 4.0Ghz @ 1.45v 20*200
NB @2600 at 1.3v

You have a better CPU cooler then I do and with this set up I get about 47C max during Prime Small FTTs. Idle at 38Cish

Less voltage may be achievable however that was my first try at 4.0Ghz and blindly put the voltage where I did and it was stable. Since my temps are ok and it is stable I haven't tinkered with it anymore.

The heatsink is held down by two screws into the board, these have springs on them and if you 'Lift' the heatsink it just wiggles about. I'm going to get shorter screws or washers and attach the heatsink firmly once my TIM arrives in the post.

Can the 550's handle 2600mhz NB? As I'm told this is where you see the biggest improvements in AMD chipsets.

Is it odd that at 3.38GHZ PRIME95 Torture (Batch) test runs perfectly on all 4 cores, but i'f i crank that up any more core 2, 3 and 4 show errors, also the AMD OverDrive stress test stops after a few minutes and says something about a calculation error?

If I crank mine to 20 x 200 (4GHZ) @ 1.425V and the NB up to 2400MHZ @ 1.2V it goes past the ''Loading operating system'' screen, shows the windows logo and then flashes a bluescreen for a millisecond then continues to loop. Do you think more voltage to the NB would fix this?

Try it. Like a said mine is at 1.3v and is stable maybe try that. Also if 1.425v doesnt work on your CPU try 1.45v. As that works for me. I realize we don;t have the same motherboard but it can't hurt.

My 550 can do 2600mhz on the NB w/o crashing. Also, the NB might need more voltage than 1.2v, i let mine run at 1.36v@2600MHz.

Sweet! I'm dying to get home now and try this.

I've ordered 4 Swiftech MOSFET coolers there, the HT series - Hopeing that will allow me a little more headroom as this board stupidly doesn't have any heatsinks on the MOSFET's...

Wow, I had one of these chips a good while ago. I know mine was a powersucker for real, demanded 1.5v @ 4 GHz to be stable enough for a 3D Mark run. But I just clocked with the multiplier, lazymans way.

Tellme, how many of you have it unlocked? ;D

First of all,you are overclocking a known bad component.2400MHz NB is easy, the crappiest motherboard with the crappiest cpu out there should hit 2500+.The issue comes when you overclock the NB,CPU and RAM at the same time-each setting effects the other. Also you are using a water-cooler with an unlocked X4 with no cooling on your VRM's and you are running PRIME,I suggest you get some cooling on them ASAP.
If I were you,I would go back to 2 cores at stock and see how high you can get the NB,which should be 2800+ with some voltage.Once you get your optimal NB speed then you can move to finding your best CPU settings, whether it's 3 cores at 4.0GHz or 4 at 3.6 etc. Then you set the RAM.

edit: good see you got some VRM coolers coming
